Apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I looked but did not find it.

I use an XXL and recently updated the Europe West maps via Tom Tom Home. That took a long while but completed OK.

When I later tried "Navigate To" the unit looped and would not function. Quick check on TomTom site and I got the answer. This involved deleting the file on the TomTom "mapsettings.cfg". The file has recreated itself and the Unit now operates normally.

This process lost all of my Favourites and seemed to lose the Speed camera Warnings (I lost the little alarm bell symbol at the side of the entries on the TomTom). I had to reset all of these - tedious job!

I'm wondering if there is any way to avoid some of this when I get the next Map Update? I will appreciate any guidance - or just sympathy!

PS I remember, at some stage a did a "Hold Down The Start Button" reset. Could this have caused the loss of info?

No. Deleting the mapsettings.cfg file caused the loss of favourites and all your camera settings.

Here's a link to a 'how to' by moderator Mike A and others for converting your favourites to a custom ov2 file that can be retained from map update to map update:

But you will still lose your camera alerts. Often you can save your old mapsettings.cfg file by operating your device in Home, then adding or editing a favourite. It always works for me so is worth a try next time.

Hi

I appreciate the answers sent to me here.

I've noted the advice and hopefully I can reduce the effort required to effect my next map update.

Thanks

A quick summary, if I may, of what to do next time....

1. ALWAYS make a full backup before you do a map update. (In this case we specifically want the old MapSettings.cfg file saved).

2. IF, after the update process, it loses all your Favourites, POI warnings and other settings, then try pasting the OLD MapSettings.cfg file back into the map folder, overwriting the new one.

3. If doing that causes the device to go into a re-boot loop (or it is re-booting anyway), try the trick of using "Operate my device" in Home and add a new favourite. This often fixes the problem.

4. If it DOESN'T fix it, remove the MapSettings.cfg file completely, re-boot and allow the device to create a fresh one.

5. you will now have to re-do all your POI warmings and Home Location, BUT you can probably still recover your Favourites and recent destinations.
You do that by
i.downloading a utility called "POIEdit" and opening your OLD MapSettings.cfg file in that.
ii.Dig around for the addresses you want to keep, delete the rest and then save what's left as a new POI file.
iii. Load that into the TomTom's map folder like any other POI file, and either leave it like that, or use the normal menus on the TomTom to locate the POIs on the "Browse map" screen and re-save them as Favourites once more.

Thanks Andy_P.

I've made a note of this for future reference.
