From today's Hull Daily Mail....

CASUALTY rates at more than one in ten speed camera sites in the region have worsened since they were introduced.

Figures show accidents involving injuries at ten of 89 speed camera site have increased since enforcement began.

At 14 sites, the number of pedestrian casualties has increased while, at 28 sites, there has been no reduction in injuries where mobile and fixed cameras came into force.

Information published by the Department for Transport on behalf of Safer Roads Humber also shows child casualties have increased at 16 of the region's sites.

Michael Harris, Safer Roads Humber partnership manager, said: "We are very pleased the majority of the core safety camera sites has seen a reduction in crashes since enforcement started.

"However, there are a small number of sites which, while speeds have dropped, have still had a small increase in collisions. We are working closely with local authorities to see if there is anything more that can be done."

In Hull, casualties have increased at three of the city's 23 speed camera sites, while injuries have increased at one of the 30 speed camera sites in the East Riding.

Accidents involving casualties at the speed camera site in John Newton Way in Hull has increased from two to five since monitoring was introduced.

At the site in Marfleet Lane, the number of casualties has increased from two to six and on the B1237 Saltshouse Road in Hull, casualties have increased from two to six since it came into operation.

In the East Riding, casualties have increased from two to seven after speed monitoring began on the A165 Kingsgate in Bridlington.

However, Safer Roads Humber says, overall, there has been a 42 per cent reduction in injury crashes at core safety camera sites, which is the equivalent of 892 fewer injury crashes.

Mr Harris said: "Safer Roads Humber has always been transparent in our performance, both successes and sites that need more work."

And there would have been a bigger reduction if some of the cameras were not there. But they seem to overlook this fact publicly, being smug over the reductions but little comment on the increases.
