I am still very new to the new Garmin I have.
This will be the first time I will have tried to transfer/install a group of poi's.
On the 1690, when I use POILoader, to transfer/install caravan sites, where do they go?
Do I have a choice? or are they located to where POILoader dictates?
I am very familiar with the Tomtom, and simply pasting the ov2 files, but the new Garmin I have seems to apply the poi's in a different method.

Using POI Loader, use the 'install to device' option as that places them where they need to be and will overwrite any existing 'same name' GPI files that are already there (providing you use the same name during creation).
I've never had a problem using this method on my 2200. _________________ Satnav:

You have no choice where they go. To access them note that they are not simply merged with the Garmin POIs, but instead you will find them in your 'Extras' folder. |

.
Thanks susamb,
That make more sense now.
So for example, when I use POILoader to instal th caravan camping sites, they will go into the "Extras" folder.
So, briefly, how do I navigate to one of these new poi's in the extras folder?
I am not near my Garmin, 8000 miles away, please bear with me.

Thanks every one,
Have to start some where, and didn't want to screw the new Garmin up.
I can do all sorts of things with my old TomTom, and still bring it back to life.
The Garmin is still very new to me though.

from what I understand with the Garmin you just need to do a full backup via copy and paste to your PC (with all system and hidden files turned on for display).
If it all goes wrong you just need to copy and paste back and it's all systems go again. _________________ Satnav:

Yes, there are 2 important things to capture.
First, do as kremmen says and you should then see a folder called .system. This is normally hidden, but it's vital that you back that up as well as the normally visible folders.
Second, everytime you update your firmware Garmins webupdater downloads a file called gupdate.gcd. When you reboot it's this file that creates the new firmware. It's worth keeping copies of these files so that if you ever need to reload a specific firmware version you can them simply copy them into your .system folder and reboot. |
