I have just bought this. I was expecting to be able to "call up" and see any map area (not just where I want to go). Is there an update or application which will enable me to explore maps just like looking it up on a map for this device? If not recommendations welcome.

If you want to look at 'Bradford' on a map you can do Where To, City, Bradford then, once found, you can tap n the map and scroll around like that.

Thanks, but it doesn't. It just goes to my Home ready to start the journey! How do I actually look at Bradford when I am not there?

I think there is an option to turn the GPS off so that you can then specify any starting point (eg Bradford!) - can't remember the exact command Embarassed

But isn't there also an option when planning a route to look at 'POIs at Destination' or something similar, which might bring up the map of Bradford as well?

i've not got my nuvi 200 to hand (very similar to the 205) so can't check for certain. but once you search for bradford on the 'where to' are you choosing 'go' or is there a 'view map' option?

pressing 'go' will start the routing and jump to your current location.

i think there is an option in the settings for 'gps simulator' - turning that on actually turns off the gps so you could scroll around the map without it jumping to your location.

and, as BigPerk suggests, once you have set Bradford as your destination choose the 'where to' function again and the 'near destination' option. I think then you can also browse the map.

OK, go it! But do I have to turn GPS back on to restart the journey once I've explored the route? Thanks for the help - I though I had bought rather a dumb unit. I have looked on nuvi site but does not seem to be much software. Interested also in walking with it but suppose one has to keep to the roads!

Yes, once you've finsihed playing around in simulation mode you need to switch back to normal mode to use it for navigation Wink

Assuming you live in UK you can download free mapping for use when walking from talkytoaster.co.uk, but the downside of trying to use your 205 for walking is the short battery life.

As indicated by MaFt in his reply, after you select a destination the option to show on map is offered (In both simulation and GPS mode). Do this and you can then use the zoom and pan to examine anywhere in the area. My current device is a 205 (not W) but I think the only difference is the wide screen display so I am able to confirm this
