Ok, its not pretty, but it dose the job well! ... what am I talking about??
The cheap-o hands free car kit it bought from one of those book clubs we all get in the office! It consists of a clip on mic with a suction pad (meant for the ear piece of your mobile) and a powered speaker on a small stalk that plugs in the 12V ciggy socket in the car.
How dose it work??..... Very well, for the first time with my 5550 iPAQ I had to turn the volume DOWN on TomTom and thats while the stereo was on!
Like I said, its not the best solution in the world, but for £4 you cant go wrong.

Do you think with a little modification a 3.5mm jack plug could be fitted to the divice to allow it to be pluged in to the jack out on the Ipaq rather than having an ugly looking suction thingy strapped to the speaker of the ipaq?

There was a 3.5 to 3.5 lead in the box come to think of it.
I'll have to check that one out!
One nice touch is the speaker has a 12V ciggy socket on the side so you dont loose the use of the socket. |

Ive just done a quick hack on one of these puppys and i can say that they are well worth every penny of the £4 shelled out to get one
changed the accoustic coupling for a 3.5 jack to plug straight into my 2210 and removed the ciggy lighter power adapter from it then lengthened the power cable on it
stuck it on the dash with some double sided sticky pads, plugged the extended power plug into me 3 way ciggie lighter power adapter and way to go
1 powered speaker for the princly sum of £6.50
(£4 for the hands free kit, £1.50 for some speaker cable from maplins, and 97p for a cheapo set of headphones from Asda for the 3.5 jack and cable)
plus a little time and some solder :p
you can see what your after here

I knew I had seen this somewhere!
Just bought the very same cheapo hands-free kit from play.com £3.99
Now I need to cut off the suction cup and replace it with a jack plug.
I'm wondering about the choke (I think thats what it is) in the cable, should this be left in or removed? Or did you fit a complete new cable?? _________________ Ian.

I posted a news item on a similar product last year, see here.
Never thought about replacing the clothes peg microphone with a 3.5mm plug, nice one _________________ Darren Griffin - Editor |

The 'clothes-peg' works ok but is too big for the iPAQ as the speaker is on the back and it clamps onto the screen which is not good.
I was wanting to clarify fitting of the jack plug before cutting off the clip and rendering the kit useless, but at £3.99 it is hardly breaking the bank :D _________________ Ian.

Definately a market here for someone to market a car kit with speaker.
