Will this work/fit/charge my Mio Navman 475

The original cable is bit too long and I figure this spring lead will be tidier - bargain for 2 delivered

It will charge the device, but it doesnt have the built in TMC antenna so you will not get Traffic alerts. The original one has the TMC antenna built in, to confirm on the sticker in tiny writing it the letters TMC.

can i just ask what exactly are 'traffic alerts' and should i get them by default or is it something i have to activate/subscribe to?

When the gadget has an active route and you touch the map the menu options displayed should be "Traffic".

However, it uses FM Radio station RDS data from some commercial stations and where I live on the south coast it normally says "None Available" as they have poor signal coverage.

Lifetime sub so no extra to pay.

yes the 475 and 575 have built in TMC so should reroute you around
The Navman /Mio devices use predominantly the ITIS signal boradcast on classic FM. There is more information about coverage and frequencies broadcast on the itis website.
