There is a new TomTom GO 2535TM World Traveler on the Amazon.com site with all maps, so maybe the UK will get a similar version?

This "World Traveller" model mentioned above actually only has "premium maps of the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe", which is not at all the same as the World of available TomTom maps that also incudes South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand etc (all of which will cost you rather a lot of money to buy legitimately). Also as its a US model of the 1000 series I assume it will not have HD Traffic via GPRS/GSM mobile signal (and indeed won't have the on board SIM card slot to make this possible) but only RDS-TMC traffic over the FM airwaves. On the other hand the lifetime map updates for the North America and Europe map is obviously attractive and not currently available on any TomTom models sold in the UK or Europe. However if Amazon US will set it to you at all I assume you will face increased shopping charges and the likelihood of customs duty, VAT and customs duty payment handling fee on top when it arrives in the UK.

Argos is currently selling the UK 950 model that has HD Traffic and Europe and North America maps and EPT tunnel navigation gyro sensor for £174.95 as shown at www.satnav-discounts.co.uk/tomtom-go/tomtom_live_x50_550_750_950.htm

You might want to check if this comes with 1 or 12 months of included HD Traffic sub as TomTom originally sold the x50 series with only 1 month of Live Traffic and then changed the deal to 12 months at some point. The ongoing subscription to HD Traffic is £49.99 for 12 months. You can get a 750 Refurb model from TomTom with 12 months of Live Traffic for £149.99 at www.satnav-discounts.co.uk/tomtom-go/tomtom-refurbs.htm but then you would have to buy a US map on top for around £50 or so from TomTom. Also it won't have the enhanced EPT tunnel navigation facility only available on the 950 model.

An Ebay seller is currently also selling used 940 models for £179.98 delivered and the 940 is arguably a better model than the 950 as it has the juke box software and FM transmitter that was removed on the x50 series but has the same processor and on board memory. However as this is second hand it won't come with the Latest Map Guarantee as the Argos 950 model will, probably won't have any included HD Traffic sub or a 12 month warranty (as the Argos unit would) and also the 950 is a good deal faster to log on to the HD Traffic servers than a 940 unit with the latest Navcore 9.058 principally because the x50 series have a more suitable SIM card for logging on quickly to the HD Traffic servers with the current Navcore.

As the 940 and 950 can both be accessed directly as a further drive letter from your PC with Windows Explorer you can add third party utilities like Joghurt's Height program or Roussillat's Tripmaster or Off Road Navigator and this will not be possible on 1000 series models where software can only be added through TomTom's heavily locked down web interface to the unit. There is also currently no European model of the 1000 series that includes a North America map. The main thing against the x40 and x50 series is they can be slow to calculate long journeys of several hundred miles or journeys in to Central London at times of day when there is a lot of HD Traffic information to be taken in to account in the calculations. The 1000 series overcomes this problem but at the price of a unit where it is much more difficult to add third party POIs like the PocketGPSWorld ones and impossible to add any third party applications.

Any model sold in the UK with a North America map is going to be a Premium model costing over £150. Obviously in the USA itself you could probably get a bottom of the range satnav with a USA only map for about 100 US Dollars or 65 quid. But then this wouldn't work when you got back to the UK.

EDIT:- I see Argos are out of stock of the 950 online so unless you can find one at a local store then the best bet may be the 750 refurb unit from TomTom with 12 months of HD Traffic plus an American map from the TomTom website or alternatively a second hand 940 or 950 on Ebay.
