When you look at those facts it really makes it plain what a carve up these latest map guarantees are. Ok they may well be the "latest" map but in reality they are more like 9 months old+.

Or alternatively, it makes you realise what a complex process it is to keep maps up-to-date. It's only because these maps can contain so much more detail than the traditional paper maps that you can spot what data is incorrect. Have you ever asked how old a paper map was when you bought it?

How very astute. I used to carry a bin with a huge number of A-Zs and I was always concerned by the issue date. (They didn't have MapShare either Smile )

I have no doubt how complex collating and getting data into a certain format is. What i have an issue with is the way these are marketed by TomTom as the latest map guarantee. As i said they may well be the latest but they are far from upto date. Even allowing for the time from data collection to finished item and allowing for the fact that they now own teleatlas, the time to get data that is years old onto a map is far too long.
As a professional driver for over 35 years i cannot recall ever being sent down a country lane or inaccesable road with a paper map irrespective of how old they were. Mind you i have been with a TomTom but like most people thats where commonsense comes into it.

Edited by Privateer to get Daggers' quoted text to look right. Thumbs Up

Precisely my own issue. The TT advert tells us that 15% of roads change every year, so we should be terrified of not having (buying) the latest map (thus inferring that only then shall we get the 15% map changes). Sure, the wording usually says "you'll have the latest map available", but carefully avoids acknowledging that it will be only the latest as at 9 months or more ago - much more in many cases. One thing about all my old A-Zs was they did each contain some sort of date, whereas TT is simply "the latest". It would be nice to have "Incorporating all known changes up to dd/mm/yyyy". At least that way we could persuade them to concentrate on some they didn't know about.

It's perhaps worth noting that the paper maps didn't have much changeable stuff like POIs and cameras, so the changes would have been fewer and easier to handle.

Often. When purchasing maps for night rallies, knowing which OS edition you're buying is important. Also, when in the past I've bought a road atlas I've always looked to see the year in which it was published. Thoughtfully the AA, A-Z, Collins, Philips and so on usually print it large on the front cover.

The UK map for my 530 and 550 is down from 241.9Mb to 227Mb. Hope it means they have tidied up some errors with PoIs?

The delay from the data collection "on the field" and the actual availabilty of the printed maps is comparable to the delay of the electronic ones. At least 6 months

You got a paper map dated, let's say, 2002 but didn't mean that it was really updated as of 2002.
They all cheat on the dates: 2002 was published towards the end of 2001 (so it looked new for a while), same as the dates on magazines... and same as the todays electronics maps: Q4/2010 means a quarted before that Rolling Eyes

It's called marketing.....they may forget to mention that a change includes filling in potholes, replacing stolen drain covers, damaged sign posts etc, so in fact very few useful map changes. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

After getting a Refurb 930 delivered from the US, I downloaded the latest W & C Europe map today and it gave me a Navcore update to 8.398, but I thought that was a work navcore. The map wont work on the installed software which is 8.002
Is that right

The correct 'latest' application (May, 2009 -- NOT 2010) for that model is 8.351.

The link to it is here:

I wonder how many of the map corrections I submitted in the last 2 months are in the new maps?

Can anyone tell me if Ravenscroft in Irvine has been fixed? In the 860 maps most of it was named Livingstone Terrace and one section O'Connor Court. (there is no O'Connor Court in Irvine at all). Look up "Ravenscroft, Irvine" in Bing Maps to see it more accurately.
