Hey guys,

I've been testing out CA and it looks nice.. The only thing Ive been looking at now is how to stop/start it reliably so that the phone doesnt eat my battery when not being used.. Its a SammyS3 and the gps is quite good.

Whats the current best approach??

I have a SamsungS3, & some NFC tags.. Is this the best approach?

CA is only one tap to start & 2 taps to stop so I don't know that using NFC tags is going to be any easier - I have GPS running all the time on my SGS3 but the phone does charge when it's mounted in the car

Do you have bluetooth handsfree in the car? There are apps (can't remember the name right now) that run in the background on the phone and at certain triggers (eg connecting to car hands free kit) you can launch apps.

IanS100 has given one option or alternatives are

Tasker
or
Trigger (formally known as NFC Task Launcher). Trigger can activate based on BT, WiFi or NFC tags

Both of these will allow a multiple of actions to be performed (start CamerAlert, start Navigation app etc)

Hi Rick-uk, IanS100 and Anybody else, do you know if any of the apps mentioned can do the following on my Android phone? --

1) I touch a screen icon
2) Phones turns off WiFi, turns on Mobile data, Bluetooth and GPS.
3) Waits 10 seconds.
4) Starts CamerAlert, Starts Waze.

Touching the screen Icon again reverses the above actions.

Reading the descriptions of the apps mentioned, I doubt that they can.

The need for a time delay on start up is because if CamerAlert or Waze start without a GPS fix they return an error which they don't self-fix once my phone has connected to the GPS network. I don't need the time delay when shutting down.

Thanks. Ali.

Using Tasker you could either use the wait or wait until command

Full list of Tasker variables and commands here

There is a Tasker add on which allows you to export your script/commands as an app which you can then add to your home screen.

I have only scratched the surface myself but hope this is of interest

Thanks for the suggestion of installing an app MaFt. I've been using SmartActions which came with my version of Android. The trouble is it can only start and stop things all at once, I have it set to trigger when it detects my car's bluetooth, but that means that I always have to have bluetooth enabled (which I don't like). It never works correctly and always ends in tears.

I'll be buying Tasker this weekend.

Thanks Rick-uk and IanS100 for putting flesh on MaFt's bones.

This page of Tasker Step Throughs may help to get you started, particularly the Auto Enable GPS Navigation (fix)

This starts the gps and waits for a period before starting a navigation app.

Previously I mentioned the Tasker addin "App Factory" which allows you to create a stand alone App, an alternative is to create either a shortcut or widget on the homescreen

Good luck and glad to be of help

I downloaded Tasker a few hours ago, still can't get my head around the enormity of it, I shall persevere and report back. I can feel that it is going to work though, just got to plough my way through the FAQ's and tutorials.

After purchase I discovered that there is a free 7day trial on the Tasker website just in case others are curious about it's capabilities.

Apologies for taking this v.v.v. OffTopic.

Hey all,

Im moving to CameraAlert from my trusty NovusGPS (aka Talex).. Ive gotta admit the novus has the best Audio Interface of all the devices. ie warns you before a camera, sounds a chime *just before the camera*, if your overspeed it sounds a warning with a "Slow down" warning and then after you pass it another chime..

I know this was discussed earlier in the thread, but that was nearly 2yrs ago... any chance of looking at this again????

What are you wanting us to look at again, exactly?

You get an initial warning. You will also get subsequent warnings if you go over the speed at any point between the initial warning and passing the camera.

Is the 'middle' warning much use in reality? The only reason you'd need the 2nd warning is if you were still speeding - but if that was the case then you'd be getting the overspeed warnings anyway.

MaFt

You are right, you'd only need the warnings if you were speeding, but I found the Talex way of simply issuing a chime before & after "reassuring".. I think the "after" is covered by the "all clear" message, but the before would be nice...
