I have a really knotty problem. Have TomTom Start (version 1 I think) and had had it plugged in to the computer. Tried to disconnect it and it won't. In other words, it will only start if it's still connected to the computer. If I disconnect it, it either freezes on the startup screen or loops.

Have tried "pin" reset -- doesn't make any difference
Holding the power button for 20 seconds to get the "machine code" screen. I get that but it still does the same afterwards.
I had installed a map update so tried both a TT restore AND an Explorer restore.
Removed custom sdk registry
Tried ClearFlash

Now what?

Try this:

Connect to Home. run the emulator (Operate my unit). Manage Favourites and make a change by adding one, deleting one, editing one, doesn't matter.

Disconnect from Home using the Device Disconnect icon.

See if that helps.

Hi David

Thanks for your help. Tried that and still no joy. Meant to say I had also previously tried deleting the mapsettings.cfg file (tried so many things forgot what).

If it's connected to the computer when I restart it, it connects straight away without asking me if I want to connect. If it isn't plugged into the computer it just hangs on the "start" screen. It's as if it hasn't been turned off, and it's still the same having been off overnight. Very strange.

When I use the "device disconnect" in HOME it disconects and you get the "safe to unplug" message, but the device doesn't actually power off -- have to stick a pin in the reset hole every time.

I can operate it with all functions via the "Operate my Start" option in HOME! Will just have to drive around with a laptop on the dashboard!

Do you have a backup?

Hi Darren. Thanks very much for getting involved. yes, I have both a TT backup and about 3 generations of explorer backup. I have already tried both a TT restore and an Explorer restore of the last backup, but not going further back yet.

Phil,

I have just had the same problem with a TT One V3.

Like you I tried everything I could think of (and a few beside) but eventually got it sorted by copying everything to PC with explorer and formatting TT as FAT not T32. Connect to TT Home and install application and map.

What version of navcore are you using?

Hi Keith. Thanks for weighing in! Wow that sounds quite serious stuff; I think I'd have to be desperate to reformat that convincingly! Mind you, i'm getting that way!

Also, if I reformat, can I then connect it to computer. How does it "connect" if there's no files on it?

I am using the version prior to the lates one (prior to 9.053 I think) as 9.053 didn't seem to like my custom menu structure!

Thanks again for your thoughts -- all are welcome!

The device will simply appear as a drive letter in Windows Explorer even if there are no files on the it - Mike

Hi Mike

Thanks for the info. Do you suggest wiping the device and if so using what method? Up until now, I have restored backups over the existing files but not cleared it completely. Presumably if there are no files on it, it can't start up in the "stuck" mode; it just becomes an external drive to the computer like a USB memory stick.

Worth a try I suppose -- can't be much worse than it is now!

I appreciate everyone giving their advice. Thanks.

To be honest before you try formating the unit I would simply open the drive letter associated with the device in Windows Explorer and delete the files in the root of the drive, don't touch any folders or files in folders though. Then fire up the Home software and use the Update my TomTom button, this will force the unit to be reloaded with a fresh copy of the Navcore software - Mike

Hi Mike

Thanks. Tried this and seemed to be getting somewhere...at first. Finally got it to start without the umbilical USB cord to the computer and it went through asking me for language, time format and so on. It then asked me for the time and when I clicked "OK" it just stopped for a while and then went back into the loop it was in previously and would again only start when connected to the computer.

Did all the above under "operate my device" in HOME and it did it fine and I could add and delete favourites, plan routes and all the rest, but as soon as I try to disconnect it just freezes up again!

Still no joy! Now asks me for the initial configuration data until it gets to "time" and then just freezes up and restarts, so never gets to the point of asking me to choose a map.

I can set those settings using HOME but it then reverts to either just freezing (if not connected to computer) or automatically connecting (without asking me) if it is.

Edit -- Actually it just freezes after "disconnect" and has to be pin-reset

What will happen if I just delete everything and start again?

As long as you have a backup you have nothing to lose by formatting the device other than an hour or two of your time - Mike
