Hi

Just a quick note really and a little view of mine.

Work colleague has Start - went out with him in van and used it for Journey, i was surprised at how simple and compact everything was compared to the ONE, TomTom original entry model which i had, compact yes, but even things like having to switch keyboard between number and letter when entering info.

I know people who don't use a lot and want a budget entry model, but does anyone else agree that there is such thing as 'To Basic'??

There is nothing "Smart" about the TomTom "Start"

Sorry just had to say that, sure its a budget device and will be acceptable to some users, as a really basic point and shoot A to B nav unit its acceptable, but as soon as you want to really push the device its limitations become apparant very quickly - Mike

Agree - but even looking beyond its limitations, as mentioned the use it does have to me felt awkward and fiddly.

It was good to use one any how, see what there like etc.

I believe the change to the on-screen keyboard (where you have to switch between numbers and letters) was done because some people complained that the original "keys" were too small for their fingers.

The only way to make each key bigger was to split the numbers off onto their own page. This probably pleased someone in central Europe, but it is really annoying for a UK user who wants to enter a postcode like W1A 1AA, who now has to switch to and from the numbers page four times. Evil or Very Mad

Is it an optical illusion or does the start have a smaller screen than the ONE, it looks smaller for sure, but the ONE was compact enough, the reason i never went for using a phone based SatNav was its just too small.

Oh hang on, im not trying to fit it in a hand bag......how inconsiderate of me!!

Comapre the One Third Edition with the Start and the latter has the larger screen area as its a few MM larger in height and the same width! - So yes its an optical illusion if you think the Start is a smaller screen - Mike
