well, if a post code is 8bytes (7 characters plus space: XX99 9XX) that means it has roughly 1000 new postcodes. i may be wrong though as this assumes the data is stored as 'plain text' which i doubt.

Can I ask a silly question? If I use the map update facility (when they get it fixed), does this get installed automatically, or do I actually need to do this post code file manually? Could someone explain the background info please? Thanks! Matthew

Not a silly question at all Matthew. You would expect the postcode file to be included in a map update but they hardly ever are (not sure if they have ever been).

Recently, the files appear to have been updated more regularly but in the past several map versions would be released with no update to the postcodes at all. Even now, it is still separate from the actual map.

The normal way to learn about new postcode files is from people on forums 'finding' the link at tomtom.com. Mad

Will this new postcode data work on an old map version. I have 2 tomtoms (one new & an old for spare). My old unit is a TTone version2 with GB maps which are around 2 years old. If the new postcodes will install, does that mean the sat nav will be able to navigate to the location of that postcode but without the "new" roads being displayed.

I would be 99% confident the new postcodes will work with an old map, but hadn't considered the possibility of them pointing it to a place without roads.

Can you try it and see? So long as you have the old ones backed up you can't do any harm.
