iancjc, thanks for yoour reply.

My P900 would not accept incoming calls whilst gprs was open, regardless of whether it was transmitting/receiving data or not. However, after searching around on the web, I found information that would change this:

In the internet settings on the phone, on the "other" tab, there is an option for "preferred mode", these are: "GSM only", "GPRS only" or "Automatic". This was set for "GPRS only". Once I had changed it to "Automatic", the phone would accept calls with GPRS open.

Paul Carl,
There may be a similar option for your phone, have a look around the connection settings.

Looks like I won't need another phone. :D

Paul,

The french traffic option was only offered as a service after adding my "Maps of Europe" product code on the traffic subscriptions web page. So I'm afraid the MRE just won't cut it.

I've just heard back from Tom Tom about the Major Roads of Europe. It's not supported!

Tom Tom are only supporting Traffic on the individual country maps, which means that going across Europe you'll have to change maps back from MRE to individual countries again to get Traffic support.

See the following question response:

Dear Mr Black,

Traffic is not designed for the major roads of europe, only the regional maps.

We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

Judging by the way that which countries you can activate Traffic for depends on the product codes entered, and that the names of the trials refer specifically to a country name (so mine is Traffic Great Britain), I suspect that the Traffic charge when the service becomes chargeable will be per country.

So far as I can tell, there's no TMC data in the Major Roads of Europe map, so it doesn't support Traffic. (Look at the file names - there's some additional files with tmc in the name in the country maps that aren't present in the MRE map).

I have: Ipaq 4150 (ppc 2003). Ericsson T39. Tom Tom 3.
Keen to try this new service I have a go at using GPRS.
My T39 is bonded to the pda and works OK as a DialUp modem with Blue Tooth link.

I have just moved to Vodafone and the contract includes GPRS.
They offer free software called "Alice connect 1.404" to make the GPRS set up easy (oh yes, thats what they say) The 4150 and T39 are listed as compatable etc.

So with Alice installed I click connect and get:

"Disconnected, Communication Port opening has failed:
Cant open the serial port, cannot create a file when that file already exists."

It doesnt elaborate on what the file is, pretty unhelpful message really.

I have tried a reset and every time I get the same message.
I emailed Alice for support, but no response. Vodafone site search turns up nothing.

Any ideas ?

I have been using TT3 for a few weeks now, so thought I would give the traffic a go. Registered for the trial, downloaded and installed ok. It works ok, once tomtom eventually starts.

I have an ipaq 2210 running the TT3 bluetooth kit, the startup time for tomtom increased from about 10 seconds to over 3 minutes after i installed this update. So I spent the next 1/2 hour taking it all off and reloading everything. I guess I wont be using this till they fix this fundemental problem.

Nice site BTW.

does anyone know or how to setup GPRS from my Ipaq 2210 to my Sony Ericsson 6610 ?

I've made a normal internet dial up connection using my own dial up account which works fine but the GPRS idea sounds much better option as the calls are cheaper...

Also traffic didnt hang up my standard dial up connection either...

Thumbs Up

can you have traffic activated for France AS WELL as keeping your GB map activated as well. Or is it one or the other?

I have both GB and France activated at the moment and can switch between the two maps and see traffic activity in both maps.

There is however no way to deactivate a subscription after it's enabled.

Richard,

Some GPRS setup information can be found in this old post of mine.

With a Sony Ericsson phone you may want to use a different Context ID to 1 - but I don't know how SE phone use Context IDs internally.

The settings for Vodafone contract and O2 are in that post - Orange is either "orangeinternet" or "payginternet" (the first for contract, the second for pre-pay), though I don't know the user name and password (if any) required.

This no longer applies to current Sony handsets such as the T610 and P900's and possibly all later Sony's. I have set-up a number of them for clients and all have worked out of the box once paired (assuming GPRS Internet Service is available on their account) connecting to Vodafone, O2 and Orange.
