I have a P550 which I use only occasionally. After several months non-use, I have used it three times in past few weeks. On two of those, it took an age (well 20-30 minutes or so) to fix sufficient satellites to know where it was, and then regularly lost the signal for no apparent reason, yet on the third, it was relatively quick (only about 3-5 minutes, very few drop-outs).
Is it possible that the volcanic dust would have had an impact, as I realised afterwards that it was struggling during the airport closures.
I vaguely remember hearing that there was a particular problem witth some versions of this model in that it does sometimes take an innordinate time to lock on - is this true, and is there anything I can do to fix it - software upgrade? external antenna perhaps?

With sat nav locks you can have cold, warm and hot starts.
A cold start is from first use or if not used for several weeks, a warm start if used within the past week or so and hot start when used within about the past 24 hours. Not exact but gives you an idea.
Another reason why it could take a while to lock is when e.g. you use the sat nav to drive to a destination but once there switch off and drive back home, the longer the distance, the longer for it to lock.
Athermic (heat resisting( windscreens can also cut the signal down so if your car has one of thes screens it's best to get a good lock on 5 or 6 sats before starting off, outside the car usiually speeds things up. The reason I say 5 or 6 is because you need at least 4 for navigation, if you drive off and one of the sats is disappearing over the horizon, you would be back to three. Drive off before getting a lock and it will take ages, if at all, to get a lock.
Devices do vary, as does the software used, but all the above gives you a general idea of what's going on. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

My Mio P350 came with an external aerial. I usually keep it in the car for when I visit places with narrow streets and high buildings, Lille in France comes to mind where the signal can vary from street to street, or should I say Rue to Rue?
