|
|
TomTom previewed an updated RIDER device to press in Amsterdam this afternoon.
The 'Urban Rider' follows on from RIDER and RIDER2 as a motorcycle/scooter specific navigation device designed for use outdoors.
Urban Rider shares the same hardware design as RIDER2 and previous RIDER users will be delighted to hear that the safety screen has been dropped in favour of a new, finger friendly user interface specifically designed with gloved fingers in mind.
IQ Routes make an appearance for the first time and although the SD card slot has been dropped, flash memory takes care of data storage and a larger battery promises unto 6hrs use without an external power supply.
Controversially, the powered mount is now an option but all versions will come with a basic dock and RAM mount. The Bluetooth headset which allows riders to hear voice guidance and make hands-free calls is included in the Rider Pro pack only.
Availability is expected at the end of May 2010 but pricing has as yet not been announced. For more information visit www.tomtom.com.

Now Tomtom have released details of a new rider (3?) I guess there is no chance of a firmware update for the rider 2
6 hours battery life will be an improvement, especially as they are not providing a on bike charger as standard. Having said that I am on my third mount in as many years as they keep failing. I thought may be they would change the design but from the write up it appears they are keeping the same mount, and externally the only change appears to be the lack of a SD slot.
I think it is dissapointing that they are not providing the bt head set with the standard unit only with the (I guess much more expensive) pro unit.
It will be interesting to see how they have priced these units. |

I think that not providing a bt headset is a good thing.
It always griped me having to pay for something I didn't want and was never going to use. |

Be more interested in if they are dropping the SD card, there goes the option to put a larger card in so how much memory is going to be on board and what is the charging option, will it switch to the mini usb like the car ones |

I wish they had added a wired connection so I could use it with my Autocom system.
That's why I am staying with Garmin.

Its nice to see it has IQ Routes, but what was TTS, from the picture it looks like we get Advance Lane Guidance now, its an expensive piece of kit and lacks too much important car functionality for the price.
TomTom are right in offering different options, I can't understand why people object to different options ?, I dont want a BT headset for instance, so its great they are offering alternate purchasing options. |

I use mine with my Autocom and the Bluetooth dongle, works a treat. The option of buying one without the BT headset is also good for me as I have Autocom on the bike already.
Wonder if they will add music to this one, that would be nice for long journeys.
