pocketgpsworld.comALK Technologies have today annouced that their CoPilot's Live HD navigation application, specifically created for, and designed to take advantage of the Apple iPad 3G's screen real estate, has been approved.

For those who weren't aware, only the 3G variants of the iPad are equipped with a GPS receiver.

There has been some debate about the suitability of the iPad as an in-car navigation device but if we set aside the concerns for a moment it is clear to see how well this would work in large trucks, motorhomes etc where space in the cab is less restricted.

ALK are the first company to produce a dedicated iPad solution but there will doubtless be many more to come. Taking full advantage of the large screen and operable in both portrait and landscape modes, Live HD offers all the features you'd expect including pinch to zoom and 2D/3D modes.

Available only in the US at present, in-line with iPad 3G availability, CoPilot Live HD is available in the US iTunes Apstore and costs $29.99.

For mroe information visit ALK's web site at www.alk.com/copilot/ipad.

Prehistoric? In what sense? I know ALK US use their own map data but over here it's Navteq?

Probably not practical for use in our smaller European cars certainly but for larger trucks, delivery vans, coaches, motorhomes etc it would work.

They don't seem to update their maps on a very regular basis from what i've seen.

I think they only update once a year, when I used it on a friends phone there were several key changes not implemented, including a junction on the A1 that was changed well over a year ago that other navteq equipped devices had covered some time ago.

You don't! The iPad is sold contract free (even the 3G ones). You can choose to take up a service contract for data or you can choose not to.

Nope, you get to choose your own provider. How this will happen in the UK where we have multiple options is not yet clear, presumably you sign-up and get a SIM sent to you.

But Apple made it clear that it is contract free at point of sale.

Yes, you can either choose a provider at prurchase or buy it with no contract at all. All providers have contract and PAYG data plans available and you can take these up at a later date if you wish.
