I have just added a memory card to my GO950Live. On my other devices, when I connect, I am given the choice of choosing either Internal Memory or memory card.
However, no such choice exists on the 950, because each is described as 'Internal memory' -- J or K.
The only way for me to know the difference is to look on My computer and see which has the TT Logo.
Anyone else come across this Question

PS Is there any way I can change the identification ?

Not sure if there is a way to change the drive letters on the tom tom, but a good rule of thumb is the last drive alphabetically, will be your sd card, so if your offered j or k then k is your card.

I thought that too. But if I look in my computer, the higher 'k' is the memory and the 'j' is the SD card - very confusing. I think I will take out the card and double check using the amount of memory used as the guideline.

Hi David
Yes, that would be the ideal solution.

The first file, which I have edited in Notepad works fine as far as Win Explorer is concerned and correctly identifies the two drives - as GO 950 Internal and GO 950 SDHC card. However, the two drives have not been changed in Home - still show as J & K respectively.
The second file in the link, will not move, copy or paste into the root of the device for some reason, so ftb I have ignored it. I think it may be intended to change the TT icon in some way Question

Job half done - but fine for id purposes.
Thanks
Graham

Sorry to blow your theory out of the water even more, Dave!
So far, my PC has always listed the SD card slot as the lower drive letter, and that's on four different TT's Smile

GePee... I've always edited the .bif file (and added a different icon) and it works really well, but as an aside one thing I've noticed with my 950 is that Home just calles it a "TomTom LIVE" rather than giving it a model number, which can get confusing if you've got more then one TT connected at the same time!

Gee-Pee, when you view your computer in windows explorer which shows all your computers drives and that of your tomtom, can you RIGHT click on the tomtom drives, select RENAME and edit them to whatever you want? or, if you can store the SDcard contents somewhere safe, format the card and elect to change the Volume Label at the same time.

You can change the drive letters of any drive (though I wouldn't change the floppy or main boot drive). These instructions are for XP though I expect Vista/7 to be similar. Make sure that nothing is looking at the drive before you begin (ie close Home completely and any Explorer windows etc).

- Open 'Control Panel'.
- Open 'Administrative Tools'.
- Choose the 'Disk Management' option under 'Storage' on the left menu.
- You will be shown details of all the currently active drives. Right-click on one of the TT drives and choose 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...'
- Click 'Change' and choose a new drive letter.
- After the change, remove the TT and reconnect for it to pick up the new drive letter.

After that, depending on how much you like messing about with your system, you can add labels and icons for a drive via regedit. I can't see one exactly as I've done it but a google for 'regedit drivelabel driveicon' finds loads of hits.

When I added a 4GB SD to my TomTom 730, I created an empty folder called:

_SD card

Due to the underscore in the name, the "_SD card" folder was top of the list and was thus a fail-safe reminder to me thatI was looking at the SD card instead of the internal memory of the 730.

Regards,

Any idea why some of my external drives/devices always use the same drive letter when I connect them to the PC, but others just get assigned to the next available letter?

It sometimes means my TTs get connected with the internal memory and the SD card slot assigned letters several apart .

For example, I just plugged my 940 in and it got assigned "G" for the SD card and "K" as the internal memory.
I've got an external hard drive which is "I", but nothing on "H" or "K" at the moment.
So it's currently:

A- floppy
B- 2nd floppy if fitted
C - boot hard drive
D - 2nd Hard drive
E - CD rom/DVD
F - CD rom/DVD
G - TT SD card
H -
I - USB hard drive
J -
K - TT internal

...but things move around depending on what TT(s) I've got plugged in.

No big deal, just a bit irritating sometimes.

I find that some devices get remembered and some (eg cheaper thumb drives) don't. Some are also remembered even when not plugged in. This then messes up others that have been set.

I get around it by setting up the TT etc with letters at the back end of the alphabet (my 730 is currently T and U). This lets the other devices use the lower end at random.
