| the other day i entered a postcode in tomtom 730.it then asks for street number.i did not have the door number.so i guessed at 32.wow i was 2 miles off.must have been the longest street in the world.why does it ask for street number.never had this problem with garmin.question is there anyway to get round this thanks in advance |

This "feature" of recent TomTom software has been discussed a lot here!
Have a read of these two previous topics...
no post code pinpoint?
exact postcode problem...
Unless and until TomTom come up with a solution you're stuck with it.
But even under the old system, if you didn't enter a house number, all it could would be to send you to the middle of the postcode area, which could be quite a long way away from where you want to be. |

Not many places have their own post code, if you put mine in it covers part of my road, a Close opposite and a Close just to the rear. NO Sat Nav could find my house with just the post code, they'd all need a house number and a Street/Road too because both Close's have house numbers 1-12.
With a mates post code it then asks for house number because the postcode only covers his road.
For an experiement type in EX6 7LD and see if you can find the house I'm thinking of.

| All my Garmins (i3, 760T & 765T) asked for a house number with a very few exceptions. |

I think crypticx realises that.
The point is that previous versions of the TomTom software allowed you to enter a postcode and select the street, then you could either enter a house number or select "Anywhere", which would take you to the centre of the area covered by the postcode within the street you had selected.
Recent versions of the software force you to enter a house number if any buildings in that street have numbers. This can take you to an area in a different postcode from the one you entered, in a long road possibly a mile or more from the area you want.

You've missed the point - do you happen to know (if asked by me in the street) the way to some house or business you've never heard of a mile away? I honestly don't think I'd get any success if the guess landed me that far away. 
I've had this happen to me on a few occasions (enough to convince me to revert to an earlier Navcore which did get it right) - one which would cost me a congestion charge which would wipe out most of my profit for driving into London! Another which would land me up in the wrong Station Road 2 miles at the other side of the motorway. I'm paid by the mile, so every mile I drive to find the address comes out of my pocket. In both those instances, my two older devices with Navcore 6 (yes, way back in 2007!!) both offered to land me within yards of the correct door.
The facts are that before TomTom made this change, all the devices got you to the right place within a very short distance. Now, they don't. TomTom have taken us on a big backward step

I posted this query elsewhere as I did not find this thread. However I totally agree with you about the backward step. Where I live, there are no street numbers, only house names, so anyone trying to find me would not be able to. There are masses of roads where there are no street numbers, plus large premises in a similar situation. For instance I found the postcode for The Colosseum, Watford, entered it and street No. was requested. No way could I find a street number and Rickmansworth Road, where this place is situated must be 2 miles long. I had a similar experience in Derby last week when looking for a motor dealer. The TT sent me the wrong way (I had entered No. 1 as the street number and it cost me at least 10 minutes.) I have been on the telephone to TomTom and they say they have had no previous complaints about this ( ) and that there is nothing they can do about it !! My next SatNav will not be a TomTom. PS. Before anyone says enter a number approximately in the middle,how can you tell how many numbers there are in the street? |

When it asks for the number press backspace and ok it then asks you to enter a number within a range (enter number between 1-24) |
