I have a list of shops that I want to make a POI category from. How do I do it, what software do I need ?

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but as it's for my TT GO 500 I thought it might be right to put it here

The easiest way depends on how many there are and what location details you have for them...

You can do it all on the Go itself if you're prepared to put them all in yourself one by one.
Just got to Change preferences / Manage POIs / Add POI category , then give it a name.

Now from the "Browse map" screen, go "Find" and use all the normal ways of finding a place - Address, postcode, latitude and longitude, or just scrolling about.
Make sure the blue cursor is where you want it, then tap the cursor button at the bottom and select "Add as POI". Select your new category from the list and you're done.
Repeat as necessary! Very Happy

If you want to do it on the PC instead (but again one-by one) there are programs like "Tyre" and "POI Edit".

If you have a list of postcodes, there was at least one program which would convert it to a POI file, but my bookmark link is dead now.
Postcodes also tend to cover much too large an area to be very accurate anyway and produce poor POI files (a lot of the ones you find on the web are like this).

I have a list, copied from a website, saved in .txt format I renamed it .ov2 but that didn't load into POI edit
Here is one of the addresses
Lewisham Food Centre (Basak Supermarket), 213 Lewisham High Street, SE13 6LY - 020 8318 1322
how do I load it into POI edit

You can't do that, every POI file format needs the data in a specific form.
The easiest to understand is the .csv format where each line of the data is something like this:
longitude, latitude, name, phone number

The ov2 format, has the same data, but not in a form that you can read as plain text.

I should have made it clearer that Tyre and POI Edit both depend on Lat/Long co-ordinates.
If you had the coordinates you could at least type them in, or in "Tyre" you can browse around the Google map to enter new points, but as I said above, I only knew of one program that could convert a list of postcodes into a POI file and even that needed the data compiled in a specific way.
Maybe someone else knows another, or where to find the one that used to be HERE but isn't any more.

I don't think there is ANY way to convert a list of actual street addresses, other than manually finding each one on a map and writing the co-ordinates down.

Out of interest, what shops are they. Maybe somewhere like this site has already got them listed?

They are 24 Hour Off Licences in London
http://www.24houralcohol.co.uk/

I work nights and I like to be able to buy a couple of beers on my way home. My route home is not always the same so I want to be able to look up the nearest one that is on route

Hmmm.
A lot of the boroughs on that site only have 3 or 4 addresses listed (although places like Brent and Enfield have a dozen or more each and Lambeth has 73!).

I reckon it would take a two or three day slog to enter the addresses or postcodes into the TT one by one, and you could then offer the results to PocketGPSWorld to add to their community POIs. Smile

More research...
(I just did a search for "postcode" in the POI forum section)
If you try it, you'll get 73 results, a lot of which are saying much the same thing.
for example:

Quote:
If you have a copy of AutoRoute, you can enter postcodes into this, and it will generate the lat/long data in a saved .AXE file. The .AXE file can then be converted by a program like POIConverter to an .OV2 file.

or
Quote:
Depending on the accuracy of the postcodes, and if you have a suitable version of Autoroute I know 2005 and 2006 work) then you can import the data into Autoroute, save the .axe file and then convert it to an .ov2 file using Oldie's POIConverter, which a Google search should find for you.

And, I found that the converter program I had the dead link for was probably taken down because the Post Office still has copyright over the postcodes, so you need to pay huge amounts to them to get a license to mess about with the codes commercially.

I take it young-goat that you have already asked 24houralcohol if they also have the info in a satnav-compatible format?

That seems to only add ONE location to the TomTom at a time?

"Tyre" can add lots and then produce a POI file, but all the programs like that still depend on you knowing the coordinates.

So far, it seems a copy of MS AutoRoute looks like the only available 'Postcode to map location converter' method we've found.
