Hell yes, but far too simple an answer! It really shouldn't be hard to use a compliant render engine but I presume there are other reasons for not doing so. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I think I snapped ages ago... I'm going to need anger management classes if they don't sort their act out soon. I have to admit though that IE8 is a LOT better. The problem now is getting people (mainly large companies) to upgrade to it instead of sticking with IE6/7. |

I think most of the time they do (with the exception of Outlook), but the problem is that users don't use current versions. Most people still seem to use Outlook 97 or Outlook 2000! - Over 10 years old! Half the web standards hadn't even been invented then. If people don't upgrade, the problem will never go away.
I've noticed many email templates use REALLY basic HTML (tables only and no CSS style blocks). There's probably a good reason for that. |

Indeed. I even started out the week designing a non-CSS table based Newsletter template but for a design that is anything more than a column of text it rapidly becomes very complex and difficult to manage.
For companies that have a web team who are both expert in web design and do that alone it's easier. But for us with a dozen 'hats' each it isn't!
My background is Unix servers and networks so web design, databases, web-server and php is something I still struggle with to greater/lesser degrees!
Sadly CSS is ideal for a Newsletter as you can lock in the design and then just type the content. Tables mean things constantly shifting and re-sizing, aaarrrgh!
But I fear we may have to re-visit that solution much as it irks me having to do so! _________________ Darren Griffin

Most of this technical discussion is going right over my head, but I'm using Outlook 2003 and it's not displaying properly.
The right hand column (Database / quotes / down to Twitter) appears first on the right, then at the end of that the main articles appear below it and to the left, overlapping the right hand column by a few mm as if the page is not wide enough.
Previous newsletters have displayed perfectly.
I hope that makes sense _________________ Mike

And therein lies another example of the quandary! The testing site shows OL2003 is OK and you have proved it isn't!
Did the previous Newsletter render exactly as per the webpage design or was it just rendered in a way that made it readable?
Oh and <tongue-in-cheek> it's 2009 now so why are you using an email client that is 5yrs old _________________ Darren Griffin

The MD of my (web design) company is using Outlook 2000. Problem is, there's no real incentive for anyone to upgrade.. Outlook 2000 works pretty well for most people. |

And the expense of Office is another consideration.
I've just retested sending the email this time rather than pasting in the code and it breaks OL2003 as SpikeyMikey said.
So something in the code from the re-mailer is causing the email to break. Gives me somewhere to start at least.

I normally upgrade to the latest Office software when i get a new laptop but didn't this time due to time and money constraints.
I'm pretty sure the web and email versions rendered the same. _________________ Mike

Try removing the . It's not necessary and may be confusing it, as you're actually trying to centre that div.
PS: how do you paste HTML on here? |

I'm guessing you just use the code tags? _________________ Darren Griffin |

No it still doesn't allow angle brackets even inside code tags, whether HTML is turned on or off - but you did it a few posts back (seach for tongue-in-cheek) |

The p align code is necessary to have the 'If you have trouble viewing' text.
I've asked our e-mailer service to look at this issue and comment on what it is they change that causes it to trip in OL2003. _________________ Darren Griffin |

More specifically, we can't post 'greater than' or 'less than' anywhere.
I normally have to edit it with { and } etc to give an indication of what I mean when I suggest something if necessary. _________________ Gerry
