|
|
Hi,
recently got the email from TT offering 25 pc off the XL LIVE IQ europe.
I understand there are various versions of mapping with differing amounts of detail available. I see this one appears to have Western & CE. I have Western EU at the mo' in my XL 22 (or whatever they called it at the time).
Due to the battery on my current XL getting tired I was thinking of taking up the offer...
Will I gain any extra detail ? I noticed on a recent visit to Mallorca that a fair number of tarmac covered roads were not on the maps !! Currently my Western EU directory is around 880MBytes.
Any advice / comments appreciated as it looks like I need to act by Wednesday at the latest to take up the offer...
Cheers Phil |

The "different levels" of mapping is due to lower cost units having less disk space so can only hold 1Gb or 2Gb maps. Even then, most roads are shown but some roads do appear to not show. There was a thread a while back noting that a whole residential estate was missing off the 1Gb version. However, most 'lost' detail is with rivers etc being less defined.
I'm not sure which map the XL LIVE can hold however.
The difference between the "Western Europe" and "Western and Central Europe" is that more countries are included on the map from "Central Europe". _________________ Gerry

The XL LIVE is W&CE 2GB map, the same as the GO720, 730 and 740 I think.
Only the 920, 930 and 940 get the full W&CE Europe map as far as I am aware.
No doubt someone can confirm this?? |

As an exercise, I went onto the TomTom website and checked what maps were offered for every TomTom model (yeah, I was bored!)
It's slightly out of date now as I did it just before the v835 maps came out, but the principles are still the same.
Amazingly there were ELEVEN different map versions offered for Europe.
I called these "A","B", "C" etc. for each type in the following chart, and the two columns show TomTom's "recommended" map for each model and also any alternatives they suggest:
(The XL LIVE hadn't come out then, but it's mapping is the same as the XL IQ routes)
Unfortunately the image size limits of this forum make them a bit small and hard to see. PM me if you'd like the original data as an excel file. |

I have a 740 Live, which has the W&CE "D". If I get a 4GB Micro SD card, can I get the W&CE "F" without paying for an upgrade?
If I did, would I notice the difference? |

ANDY_P, thanks for the effort of sorting out what comes with what.....
Wouldn't it be easier for everyone if TT just offered or more simplified list !
Well I have ordered the unit direct from TT, with UPS in the UK as I type.
It will be interesting to compare the Map I have in my XL 30 (latest map via the tt mapupdate service) (WEu) (880Meg) compared with the one in the XL Live IQ routes W&CE.
Just hope that it is at least as upto date !
Thanks to everyone for the input... Hope the live service is as good as it sounds, at least I have 3 months free trial..

I think your lovely coloured table confirms what I said?
Not sure though as I lost the will to live half way through reading it! |

You USED to be able to, by buying from the TomTom website and telling it you had a different machine.
But some time ago, they changed things and if you try it now, all you get is an on-screen message saying "you cannot use this map with this device" and you have to go through a huge palaver with customer services to get your money back or the "right" version.
So no.... sorry.

Why TT have to make it so complicated with so many different versions of the same map is beyond me - with and without IQ Routes data, with and without Traffic support, with and without ASR support etc. |

It's all down to trying to squeeze them into the very limited memory space they put on the machines, I guess.
It would be so much easier if they were a bit more generous with the onboard memory, but I suppose margins are so tight they need to save every penny to keep competitive. |
