Welcome to the forum Andy, the best place to start with is the TomTom FAQ page which is near the top of this forum index as one of the "sticky" threads, to save you the trouble of finding it simply click Here #1 is the one you need for the backup but if you have the time some of the others will furnish you with more informations.

As to why we don't recommend using Home for backups, there are a number of reasons, in the past it has messed up files to the point that specific functions no longer work when you re-install software, also you can only have a single backup of your device, some of us keep more than one backup so we can easily roll back to a previous version if a new release isn't up to the standard it should be - believe me this has happened over the years, for some users Home probably does everything they need from the nav unit to PC interface, for me I try to use it as little as possible as I hate it with a vengeance - Mike

Hi Andy and welcome.

Avery quick reply because I am watching the rugby. You will get a more precise reply than mine.

TT Home is flaky to say the least. You need to make a back up of your 'virgin' TT so that you can always go back to a s near as damn it a factory start.

Now, I'm using a Mac, so slightly different here. Make a folder on your desktop - call it what you like something like TT 101009. TT back up and the date.
Make sure you have 'show hidden files' ticked on your computer.

When you connect the TT to your PC, just copy and paste into that folder, and keep it safe.
Hope I have that right, like I say on a Mac.

Don't add anything to the TT or change it until you have done the back up.

Cheers Bob, an almost silver surfer as well!!

Edit by me.

Bum, beaten to it.

I haven't heard of the PC keyboard not working at all, but just in case it was a postcode you were trying to enter, there's a bug in the latest versions where you cannot seem to enter postcodes using the PC keyboard. The workround is that you need to hold the "shift" key down while you enter the first letter (caps lock doesn't work).
