|
|
I saw a recommendation for a Wi-Fi sniffer/analyser program for a PDA on this forum, a while ago, but I can’t find the post.
A friend of mine has recently bought the following:
iPAQ 3660
iPAQ standard c/f sleeve p/n 173397-001
Linksys Wireless C/F card 2.4ghz, 802.11b Model WCF12
Can anybody recommend any software for his set-up that will do the job and report on Wi-Fi hotspots?
Thanks, _________________ Robert.

I've no experience of it, but you could try looking for PocketWinc and seeing if that has any support for your friend's hardware.

I use pocket Boingo, available free from their web site (http://www.boingo.com/download.html#) on my HP iPAQ 4150.
Net stumbler is also very good (and free), but does not work on the 4150, and I'm not sure if it will work on your set up. I use it on my laptop with a Lucent WaveLan card and it's great. There is a pocket PC version available also (www.netstumbler.com)

Personally, I use WiFiFoFum (as much because it's being actively developed as anything else). Though I suspect your mates iPAQ is running PocketPC 2002 and as such I doubt it will work.
A good starting point may be the new version of MiniStumber which has just been released. It has GPS logging, works fine with my WCF12 and I believe it also supports PocketPC 2002.
Failing that, a fairly comprehensive list of such software can be found here
Note, alot of these programs can be picky about the brand of chipset in the WiFi card. For reference the Linksys WCF12 uses a Prism chipset.
cheers

I use PocketWinC which works a treat but a good free one is MiniStumbler. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thank you for the replies so far. I’ll pass them onto my friend.
I like the idea of MiniStumber with GPS logging. I have a CF sleeve for my 3970 so I might get a WiFi CF card and have a go myself.

I'd say "do it", Robert. I make a tremendous amount of use of my Wi-Fi card. ActiveSync over Wi-Fi is much faster than via any other connection method - it makes synchronising Sprite Backup files using MightySync a realistic proposition.
I make a lot of use (especially when writing forum posts) of Pocket Controller - Professional over Wi-Fi. Add to that web browsing (great for catching up with the news from bed), listening to net radio using Windows Media Player (again, great from bed!) and even synchronising POI files using the new features in GPSAssist 2, and you can hopefully see why I wouldn't want to be without a Wi-Fi card.
I've got an 802.11b Access Point on my LAN, which has routed Internet access.
