As from today, Tuesday 1st September 2009, there will be new 20 mph speed limits that come into force on almost all of the residential roads in Oxford, as well as sections of main A and B roads where they go through shopping areas.
Please see here for further information.
Please ensure that you have the latest version of the PocketGPSWorld camera database installed onto your SatNav unit and be sure to report any fixed or mobile sites that you may come across that have the wrong speed limit.

Personally, I'd rather have a car travelling at the limit (30?/40?) than a b****y great bus thundering down on me!

I don't know the area but suspect this will be "main" roads in residential areas that are not in themselves major. The bus company would have been involved in the consultation and would probably have said they would need to cut services to local areas if this went through. The locals would have objected and this would be part of the compromise.
Note that three areas just rejected the 20mph zones completely. That's what local pressure does with these schemes.

| Portsmouth went 20mph across the city completed approx 12 months ago....it was phased in across all roads in the city with the exception of major throughfares......... |

so all the main roads where the accidents happened are still at their original speed and the ones where there were no accidents are reduced to 20... wonderful! or have i got the wrong end of the stick?

Personally, I'd say that the roads with a fair bit of traffic on them are still at 30 and those that ankle-biters are running around on - the quiet roads outside their houses - are at 20.

| Yep correct - as far as i can think - all roads within Portsmouth City which have Gatso's on are all 30mph/40mph..... |

So this sounds to me like the limit is an 'environmentally' determined one, not a safety one, and I assume LAs are entitled to do this. Though whether they can yet put up a camera in such non 'black-spot' (ie those roads where an accident has happened within a hundred miles as far as I can tell  ) areas, I'm not quite so sure.

I think that, for Oxford at least, there are three reasons:
1. Safety.
2. Environmental.
3. Getting cars out of the whole city.
Oxford has a few fixed cameras (all Gatsos) within the central area so I expect that those will have had their limits all set to 20 mph. There are also a few mobile sites in the central area. What we may see happen is that more mobile sites are set up within the 20 mph limit area.

On Friday 4th September 2009 I took a bus from the Thornhill Park & Ride to the city centre. The Speed limit changed as follows:
50 mph from Thornhill Park & Ride to Green Road Roundabout
30 mph from Green Road Roundabout to Burry Knowle Park in Headington
20 mph from Burry Knowle Park in Headington to top of Headington Hill
30 mph from Headington Hill to St Clements
20 mph from St Clements to city centre.
You’ll see that halfway through the journey the speed limit actually increases from 20 mph back to 30 mph. There is no rhyme or reason for the drop in speed limit as the whole of Headington shopping area has pavements at least two cars wide either side of the main road.
The Oxford Mail also reports that some of Oxford's new 20mph speed limit is currently unenforceable, see here.
