Hi

I've notice that the slow processor in SatNavs can take a long time planning long distances, and the TomTom 540 can take a while especially looking for faster routes.

The same calculations on TomTom's website route planner are very much quicker and can give different results, possibly due to trying many more combinations in a fraction of the time and on this busy Friday it appears to be finding quicker routes, but of course I can't know this is correct without actually travelling it. I've been watching their online map of traffic and so glad I'm not going anywhere this bank holiday Laughing

As the x40s have a data connection, what seems like a great idea is to off load the processing to TomTom's faster servers, so the sat nav gives the start and end points to their central server then that returns a stream of data for the sat nav to use as the planned route. This would also mean the latest data can be taken into account for IQ routes and it could plan around the traffic on the server.

I wonder if they have thought of this, it would seem to be the next step in improving the speed and accuracy of the route planning.

Regards

Phil

That is what it is like with google maps on a mobile phone isnt it? You type in to find a route and it downloads the data to your mobile phone. And google maps uses tele atlas which is tomtom.

Just imagine coming up to a major junction and an incident occurs then "server not available" or "server busy" or "network busy" or "network unavailable" in a remote area. I would prefer a more powerful processor with ample internal memory in a stand alone unit.
