sorry if this has been posted, i have tried searching but couldnt find an answer!...and i havent been on for a while!

ok, have an old nuvi 310, no need to upgrade really yet...

have speed cameras installed to unit via uploader, always up to date (cheers Ash!!)

now

Can i somehow install other POI's, like supermarkets, banks etc. via an SD card so i dont have to keep removing them, instead just take the care out?, or is it a case of placing them all in one folder for mass upload/removal??

thanks in advance!!

Yes. When you run POILoader select Garmin Device and then select the SD Card instead of the main memory when promoted for the drive (on the 3rd screen "Find Device") to load the POIs to. It'll do the rest. Obviously you need the SD Card in the device when you do this...

Can you explain exactly what you did?

How do you know the nuvi doesn't see them? Do they appear under

Where To?, Custom POIs

(Oe Where To?, Extras, Custom POIs)

OK. Let's start from the beginning....

Did you use a program called POILoader to load the files onto the SD Card or did you just copy and paste them onto the SD Card?

If you didn't use POILoader you need to get it from here. Install it to your PC and use it to copy the POI files to the SD Card. Instructions are here. Whilst this is for the Speed Camera Database the basic instructions still apply. When you get to the 3rd screen make sure you select the SD Card in your Nuvi.

it works fine loading them direct to the nuvi, just not the SD card, they are on there as below

F:\garmin\poi\poi.gpi

just cannot see them on the nuvi, only the speed cameras

having re-read it and thinking back, where select device is, i only get nuvi and my other drives showing up, no SD card unless i remove it and place it in the F drive?

should this read it via the nuvi?

Yes. You should see 2 drives in Windows Explorer when the Nuvi i s plugged in. One for the Nuvi internal memory and one for the SD Card slot. Even without the SD Card in the slot you should still get an Empty Removable Drive.

You mentioned the F Drive. What is that? An SD Card reader built into the PC?

Make sure all poi's are cleared from the unit and card.

Connect to PoiLoader with the card REMOVED from your unit, remove existing poi's.

Connect to PoiLoader with the card IN your unit, remove existing poi's.

When you load the poi's via PoiLoader, connect your unit without the card in it, put the card in your card reader, then on the screen:

Please select where you would like to save your Points of Interest to:

select Custom Folder (Advanced)

Then browse to your card in the card reader.

etc

As you say, ALL the poi files need to be in the same folder each time you do this.

Please be aware if you do this it sets up the wrong folder structure. It will generate the POI.GPI file on the SD Card but will not generate the necessary garmin/poi folders.... This is why you should use the Garmin Device and then select the SD Card from the drop down list.

This function is useful for creating the file offline as it where but then copying it by hand to the garmin/poi folders on the SD Card or unit.

It appears the SD Card Reader in the Nuvi may have failed. When you plug the nuvi into your PC can you see 2 new drives or one?

It seems I'm not entirely correct (although it might vary from series to series.)

With my 765 if i try to save the POI.GPI file on an SD Card i get the following odd error:

Quote:
---------------------------
POILoader
---------------------------
The path name you have entered is not a directory, please specify the directory where your POI files are located.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Even thought it wants to know where i want the POI file saved at this stage not where the POI files are.

Anyway specifying a folder on the PC and then generating the file there works OK. If the file is copied to the route of the SD Card (i.e. with no folders) it still works OK. So it looks like the folder structure isn't as important as i thought...

It also works with my 760 too.
