Can I have a speedometer permanantly visible on my 700 any answers apreciated

Yes (if it's the same as on my 720).

Go to preferences, status bar preferences then on yur way through the pages you'll see an option to display speed.

Tip: to be readabl at a glace have the status bar horizontal and disable any other info you don't need so the font becomes bigger.

I use this all the time in my Motorhome as the speedo is in Kilometers.

Thanks for that Jimbo, I am hopeing I can set it up so that I can use it to calculate the speed on the broads rivers on my boat

You may have a problem there as the TomTom is designed to be used while driving on roads. Therefore, it will always try to lock you onto a nearby road which could mess up the speed reading as it bounces you between locations.

I do understand it might not work but some feedback on some broads forums seem to think it works for them but not nec. T.T. but I can but try

I would expect the TT to calculate speed by the varying relationship to the appropriate satellites not referencing the roads. However the speed upon the Broads would I imagine be very slow so it may not even think you are moving at all, but this is just a guess. It is normally more accurate than a standard car speedometer at regular road speeds.

It certainly will work away from roads if you have no route set. I've used mine on a cross channel ferry to check the speed. But that was travelling at 40mph, not the 4 or 5 on the broads, so I can't say for sure that it will work for you.

Be interesting if it does work though because the speed limits on the broads is very difficult to work out because the tide and wind have to be taken into account and you have to rely on the amount of wash you are producing, I'll post back on here when I have experimented, thanks for all the imput

Do they define exactly how the speed should measured on the Broads? I well remember from the days of old when I did a fair bit of offshore sailing it was possible to record an apparent speed of six or seven knots on the ships log, but be actually going backwards relative to the land. So is it relative to the land or the water? The TT will measure speed overland relative to satellite positions.

Woodchip, don't suppose you have access to a GPS enabled PDA do you? There are a few shareware programs for pocket PC like GPS Dash which can be set up like a big fat speedo. Done that in the MH before now.

You might find adding the 'Off Road Navigator' program to your TomTom helps? It's specifically for when you are not travelling on mapped roads, and it has an option to show speed.

Jimbo, unfortuately I sold my PDA some time ago so that option is a no no.

Eric, I am pretty sure it will be the overland relative speed. Speed limits are enforced on the broads to limit the amount of bank erosion caused by wash and there are a number of "Rangers" and/or police equiped with radar guns at various points . Some of the hire boats are marked alongside the throttle with approx. revs equal certain speed but you can see the difficulty if you are running at 3 mph and the tide is against you at 3 mph you would be standing still . Private boats like mine do not have any indication of speed and if this works I assume using the sat. system it would be more accurate. I would add that unless you are blateantly speeding, the police usually just give a helpful warning, oh be it like that on the roads. Once again thank you all for your input. Smile

Hi all, as promised an update of my initial question. I downloaded the software as suggested by Andy and was out yesterday and it works fine, at least down to 3 mph as I didn't look when I was going any slower. I am now wondering if I can download an overlay of the broads rivers and get it to show on the T.T.
