Garmin 765T getting bricked in NA?

Garmin have posted the following on their blog.

It has come to our attention that the Garmin nüvi 7x5 series has a firmware error that is causing some devices to perform an unprompted GPS software update and in some cases shut down. Garmin is aware of this issue and we are working diligently on a solution. We know our customers rely upon their GPS device and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. Developing quality products always has been and continues to be a priority at Garmin. For regular updates about this issue, please revisit this article at www.garmin.com/support

If your device is repeating the message "Updating GPS firmware" or "GPS Update Complete", a software update will be available during the afternoon of June 24th (United States time) that will resolve the issue. Once this update is available this article will be updated with instructions on how to perform the update to your device.

If you have a device that will not power on as a result of this issue please follow the steps below to request a Return Authorization to have your unit repaired:

1. Click here to open the form. (The form will open in a new window)
2. Select On the Road for the Market Name field
3. Select nüvi 700 series for the Product Group field
4. Select your nüvi model for the Product field
5. Input the Serial Number for your device. The serial number can be located on the bottom of the unit.
6. Select Repair Information for the Question Type field.
7. Enter nüvi 7x5 series power issue into the field labeled "Provide a short description of your problem or Question":
8. Enter any additional information concerning your problem into the field labeled "Provide any additional details......"
9. Enter your first name into the First name field.
10. Enter your last name into the Last name field
11. Enter your email address into the E-Mail address field
12. Enter your phone number into the Phone number field
13. Enter your Shipping Address into the Address field
14. Enter your City into the City field
15. Enter your State into the State field if applicable
16. Enter your postal or zip code into the Zip field
17. Select your country from the drop down list.
18. Click the button labeled "Submit email to a Product Support Specialist"

We will respond to all email requests as soon as possible providing you with return instructions.


So it looks as though there's going to be a fix later today (probably tomorrow morning for us Brits). Mine gave me the error twice yesterday so the only time I've turned it on today was when it was attached to the computer so I could take a backup.

I took the plunge this lunchtime and rang Garmin about the 765T brick I now am in possession of. I was pleasantly surprised when my call was answered within 3 minutes! Feeling that the Gods were with me, I explained what had happened and asked what I should do next. Here is where I came crashing back to earth with a bump. The gentleman told me that my call would be logged and I would receive an email explaining what to do within 2 days. When I pressed further that this seems to be a widespread and growing problem, he was non-commital. No mention was made of return for repair or anything else.
Seems like they've set something up just to log the calls. If they have and the connection time is as short as I experienced, then I guess the more people who ring in and let them know you have a brick, the better.
Getting out a working fix is obviously going to take a little time, but they should be made aware of the extent of the problem.

Thought I had got away with it but oh no, mine goes for about 3 minutes then comes up with searching for satallites! And that's how it stays.
Only had this for about ten days or so. Is the fix going to work.
At least mine still switches on..... WRONG... Is DEAD!
Have filled in the form but do not want a reconditioned unit as it's only 9 days old.

I didn’t see this thread Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad I used my Nuvi 765T today but a screen appeared saying Updating GPS then it turned off and won’t turn back on. What do I do now ??

Follow the instructions in the post at the top of this page to get a return authorisation from Garmin.

Add mine to the list of bricks!!

It took me to Winsford today with no problems, but on the way home it showed the GPS update message, then wouldn't acquire satellites. Tried re-starting it, showed full coverage, then the update message again, and no satellites.

I looked at the software list in the settings and it showed GPS 0.00

Just tried to connect to my pc to re-load the software, and it's dead.

New application update is posted. Not positive, but I think that, for now, it will disable the MTK Hotfix function. I'm pretty convinced this is an issue that originated from MTK firmware and not a Garmin created problem, tho that's of little matter to the affected users. In any case, if you are still able to connect to WebUpdater, the 3.6 application update is intended to correct the update looping.

FWIW, here is what I think happened. MTK, the gps chipset provider, used licensed/patented code (from another company) that has a flaw. Beginning late afternoon (about 5:00 EST, US) it misread timing signals from the satellites and the chip firmware determined the current date/time erroneously, putting it several weeks in the past. This caused the Garmin firmware to interpret that newer software was available but not yet loaded. So the Garmin OS attempted reload based on the much older incorrect working date, perhaps even pre-dating the actual device release. That's evidenced by the rollback to version 0.000. In the meantime, the MTK chip is still reporting an incorrect date to the Garmin OS which would then attempt an update again, a continuous loop of bad date leading to a reboot or in some cases totally crashing/disabling the Garmin OS system software. If the OS has been damaged, then the only option is to return your nuvi for exchange. If it will still connect via computer and can be recognized by Garmin WebUpdater, the OS is OK and the device can be returned to a usable state with application update 3.6

OK downloaded the 3.60 firmware and device still attached to the PC. After that you are offered the following (maybe only if you downgraded to 2.50)

GPS Chipset Type M
No change history was found for this update.

and then a load of others to do with voices, help etc

I'll skip these for now...

Paul, you had renamed your previous chip update, correct? That's why it shows as available for update after 3.6 was applied. Don't re-install 'Chipset M", quite yet. I think it's now perfectly safe, but no harm if it's not done right now AFAIK.

My 765T experienced the same problem last night. I was running firmware 3.40 and I hadn't connected to webupdater for over 3 weeks.

My unit refused to turn on so I held the on/off switch to the on position for 30 seconds and it re-booted. The unit re-acquired sat signal but after another 60 seconds the GPS update message appeared. Unit was shut down and now won't switch on at all !!!

I did and that was my thinking too. I'm happy to wait a while because i rarely use this for anything.

That's what puzzles me. How this managed to bork the unit so badly the unit won't even power up! I assume there's some sort of software control over the boot up?

Can anyone confirm that disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds does unbrick the units?

Many in the US forum report than disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds and then reconnecting allows the unit to come alive at which point the updated f/w 3.6 can be installed.

If you go back to the link I posted yesterday and move to the bottom, you'll see a bunch of people have done that, Paul.
