Garmin 765T getting bricked in NA?

Conjecture is the problem may be due to a faulty chipset for the NA units compared to the chip supplied for European units. See the last couple of posts in the thread.

(mind you, the thread is active and growing by the minute, as you can understand).

Actually, just remembered this is the one Darren had, where the GTM Unit has a US subscription and not UK / Europe....

Wonder if it's US Spec?

Is there any way to tell without switching it on?

I'm in the UK. I've just read this. My 765T hasn't been on today. So, I plugged it into the PC and renamed those two files mentioned. Unplugged it and switched it off. Then I went outside and turned it on. It found satellites. I then planned a route. As it finished the planning, it said "lost satellite reception". Now it has no satellites at all. I waited a couple of minutes and then switched it off.

So, similar to the others - but it's not dead. I'll wait a day or so and see if a proper fix can be found.

EDIT: I went outside again and turned it on. Found sattelites again. Planned a new route. Satellites disappeared. Ahah - maybe it's that? Switched it off. Switched it on. Found the satellites. Cleared the route and planned a new one. All OK. Did it again. All OK. Now I can't "break" it. So I have no idea what's going on.

Seems this is worldwide and renaming the files may not work after all. It appears that renaming the files produces the same problem alan_sh mentions above i.e. it works for 10 minutes and then dies. Whilst the unit can be restarted and it'll work again, it'll fail after 10 minutes..

It appears that disconnecting the battery and a hard reset does (maybe) fix it...

Not sure if my 765T holds the record for the shortest life.

Arrived from our distributors at 3pm yesterday. Worked out-of-the-box on the way home (12 miles) with hands free and TMC just fine.

Registered and updated last night.

Crashed and burned at 9:30 am and it is now as dead as a Python parrot.

Called Garmin today who said even their own 765's were dead and to expect an e-mail in the next 24 hours to suggest a "fix". Hmmm.... "fix" when it won't power on - I am waiting to see what that entails.

Our company won't buy any more Garmin kit after this event (can't take the risk) and I have had to rescue my old TT G700 from the recycle bin!

My 765T seems to be working OK at the moment. I left it on for 25 minutes with a route planned and it didn't lose any satellites.

If its working Alan, leave well alone. My beef is that they should have offered an immdeiate replacement as I had it for less than 24 hours. I thought TT support was "iffy", but so far I am far from impressed with Garmin.

In the UK, we can take a dead unit back to the shop if it's that new. No need to contact Garmin at all. I got mine from Halfords (a UK car accessory shop) and they offer a 30 day replacement for things like this.
