Please take time to read the ENTIRE thread including the second page as trying this ruined the 720, but there are some instuctions on taking the x20 device appart in This Thread, if you are in any doubt send it to a repair center - Mike

Under what circumstances are you running the 720 without power? It is designed & intended to be used with the car charger plugged in.

well i was walkin round paris last week and slightly worried of getting lost when the battery ran out..
I do this quite often not paris mind you but towns around the uk..
i stripped the whole unit down yesterday to reveal a sony battery that was plugged in by wire but seems to be stuck to the unit and wondered if this could be replaced

If that is the case, why does it have options to plan a walking or cycling route? I certainly bought my TomTom with the expectation i could use it for helping me navigate on foot when abroad, not just when travelling by car.

If using it on battery power, make sure you disable the FM transmitter and the Bluetooth connectivity as these are both massive current drains.
Turning the volume and brightness down will help too.

And 2D mapping with North Up reduces battery consumption even more.

Nice write up on the battery swap, but the x20/ x30 devices have the battery glued to the PC which causes a slight issue (I call it stupid construction, the older devices were much better assembled)

And a rather belated welcome to the forum though, as you have been a member for some considerable time before making a post - Mike

Good instructions for a One 2nd Edition, thanks!
But dosser's machine was a Go720, and Mike Alder already posted a link to his instructions for that. Smile

Would it be possible to use some form of battery pack connected to the USB skt, making it more usable away from the car...?

They've been available on eBay, and probably elsewhere.
