Being a cheapskate, I bought a PalmOne Zire with GPS receiver and viamichelin mapsonic software from eBay for a total of 8 quid.

The only thing it didn't have was Speed Cameras on the maps, (or alerts when you got near them) so I though I would have a go at adding this capability.

Having read some of the threads about user generated POIs, this seemed like it could be the answer, so I loaded some old asc files to see whether they would show up - (I used a bodged Gatso image scaled down as the POI bitmap)

This all worked as advertised, so I subscribed to the Pocket GPS World speed camera database releases to get up to date speed cameras for the UK.

Having experimented with lots of combinations, I have established that trying to get the speed zoned 'complete' collection loaded for Gatsos, Specs, Mobile, Temporary, Redlight is just too much for the extremely limited memory in the Zire31

(Which will just lock up or freeze randomly if fed too many user POIs.)

So

Here is my final (stable) configuration

Categories Loaded (Generic POI asc versions not speed zoned)

Uk Gatso
Uk Mobile
Uk Specs

Categories ignored (won't fit without causing instability or errors)

Uk pMobile
Uk redLight

Since I standardised on this setup, it has been completely stable, and reliably warns me - with a 30 second and then 10 second audible warning of approaching camera locations.

The Pocket GPS World subscription cost me more than my GPS receiver setup, but in my first month I reported a change to a Specs zone I drive past daily, and was awarded lifetime membership - yes they do exist!

I'm extremely pleased with the setup I've got - for the money it is as good as it gets.

If you're on a tight budget this is a great bargain setup - recommended.
