I'm new to the forum, and I have been having one problem with my maps displaying on my PDA.
The problem is, not all my maps display. All my national park mapping (1:25k and 1:50k) work fine. The maps I am having problems with is the individual 1:25k explorer sheets.
The .qct files go across to the pda no problem and those files are present on the pda memory OK, but they don't show in the 'map' list on pocket navigator. When I try to execute one of the .qct's from the pda memory MM starts ok but I just get a blank screen and no error messages.
I have checked and all file extentions are correct.
On the image that I have included with this post as an example all maps work fine on the pda except 'explorer 174' and 'explorer133'. I know there is no index or elevation files associated with these maps, but that would have no relevence.
Kind regards, hope someone can help.

Bob.

Hi Bob,

Do those map files run on the PC software? (add the card to the maps list, or just double-click on the .qct file).

What is the version number of MM on PC and PDA?

Cheers, Alan.

Yes, they open fine on the PC when added to the MM map list.

Hi Bob,

Sorry I can't see why the maps won't work, but it might have been helpful if your screenshot had included file sizes and extensions. I'm still suspicious that they're not .QCT files, but it's just possible that the particular version of Windows Mobile, or the formatting of the memory card (FAT16/32) is significant.

Presumably you "cut" the maps using the "Mobile Device : Send visible map portion" method. I can only suggest that you try again, but edit the map name to something shorter (in the Name field) before "OK".

Cheers, Alan.

Thanks, but I'm baffled too. They are .qct files and I've even tried renaming the files to shorter names and including the .qct extension etc. I've tried portions of map from a few Kb to a few Mb. I'm sending the map portions via the usual method.
Perhaps I can PM someone and send them a small map portion that won't work on my device to see if it works on theirs?

Regards
Bob.

Bob,

The mobile app may not consider these maps to be OS maps and so they won't display them. Different builds of s/w seem to behave differently regarding map imports.
Try using the European 5.1.3 version http://www.memory-map.co.uk/downloads/mmv5/mmv5_euro_513.exe and re-install the mobile app (you may be able to have both installed at the same time).

Hi Bob,

Notes: Changing the map file name after creation does not change the name that appears within MM's map list. There is also the "Send map enclosed by Route" method (Right-click on route : Operations : ...) but "Send visble" should work as well.

Those map files are quite small. Maximum zoom-in on a 1:25k map shows about 1.5 square kms and creates a ~100kbyte file using "send visible" from my screen. I wonder if MM is creating "white field" maps perhaps from off the edge of the "real" map. The .QCT files contain data compression so the file size is dependent on the "picture" content.

You can try PMing me a map of perhaps 100kB as above but I might not be able to check it for a few days.

Thanks jsoap for coming in on this. Worth a try but the OS version normally opens "imported" files alright. Yes, you can install OS and European editions (and OS 2004) together on both PC and PDA, but the File Associations can get confused so tapping/clicking on .QCT and .MMO files may then produce unexpected results.

Cheers, Alan.

Just tried sending a whole explorer sheet @ about 25Mb, still nothing. No map title appears in the map list on the mobile.
Will try that euro version.

Hi Alan,

I noticed, of late, that support of "imported" files is patchy, including some builds of that support it on the desktop but not on the mobile version. Note that there are problems with backwards compatabilty with overlays, and export of overlays from OS to Euro PDA does not work.
Personally I've removed all the other versions and settled on 5.1.3 euro for everything.

Hi Bob,

Just a thought. You do realise that you must close MM with Menu : Exit (not the X) and then restart it before the maps are included?

Trevor: Yes, MM have changed the .MMO format several times which is one reason why I'm trying to stay with v5.1.3. Wink
Unfortunately, the Euro version cannot read legitimate OS licensed maps. Sad

Cheers, Alan.

Just trying the euro version now and I can't seem to load any of my maps. Maybe because of Alan's last comment about not recognising legit OS maps?.
I have made sure I am closing MM with Menu/Exit, but still to no avail Sad

Thanks,
Bob.

My thinly veiled email suggested that 'explorer 174' and 'explorer133' are not actually legit, which would indicate that your problem is not related to map "imports". I apologise if this is not the case.
Regarding vieiwing of OS maps in the Euro version, this is of course against the licencing agreement, but is never the less, a fairly trivial matter

Hi Bob,

Yes, you need to install MM OS v5 again (I don't think it's essential to remove Euro) to get the File Associations correct on the PDA (or alternatively hack about with its registry). Until then, tapping on any .QCT or .MMO files will open the Euro version which cannot legitimately use OS maps. However, I still cannot see why those Explorer maps won't open.

The significance of tapping on a .MMO file is that it is the only way to load overlay data when away from a PC, since overlay importing is not a menu option on the PDA version. Crying or Very sad

MM is getting into a real mess with different versions of software using the same file extensions and altering the overlay format within the v5 series, etc.. Sad

Cheers, Alan.
