How to upload and download POIs?

Hi guys.
I'm just a beginner on using Navigator 3 and I'd like to know some basics:
1) How to upload a POI file to the PC?
I copied a file named POI I found on the map folder but on the PC it gets the extension .dat; souldn't it be ov2? My idea was to see its contents and "learn by example" how to create my own POI files... :-(
2) Frustrated with the previous task, I created a "tentative" .ov2 and .bmp (using POIEdit), I put it on the map folder but... I can't see any of my POIs on the map... :-((
I'm not sure of type of POIs I created because I don't know how to specify the type of POI on POIEdit...

Is there someone patient enough to help me? Thanks in advance.

Hi Lupo,

I use Oldie's excellent WinOV2 PC program (which can be downloaded form this site as well. If you use any of the published POIs from this site and run the "Dump ASC" option it will create a text file with the extension of *.ASC which can be read by notepad, it’s best not to use Word. You should get something like the following, which has been taken from the Jeep Dealership POI:

; Longitude, Latitude, "Name"
-1.862395, 52.549042, "All Electric Garages, Sutton Coldfield"

Longitude and Latitude can be determined by locating the position on http://www.Streetmap.co.uk

If you want to use spaces in your POI's name then use underscore "_". The BMP file also should be exactly the same name as the *.OV2 name, otherwise you won’t get the graphics on the map.

I use MS Paint to create the POI BMP file, which needs to be 22 x 22 pixels, saved as a 24 bit BMP.

When you add POIs to your PPC, in the same folder as the map data, TTNav should not be running. If you still have no success then performing a soft reset should work.

Finally don’t forget to select the new POI so that it shows on the PPC. Thumbs Up

24 bit BMPs can cause Navigator 2 to crash on startup - I don't know whether the issue is fixed in Navigator 3. It's probably better to stick to 8 bit paletted.

To address Lupo's two points.

POI.DAT are the TomTom supplied POIs for the map in question. You can't edit them - they're in a proprietary and compressed format.

It sounds as if you did the right thing with POIEdit - did you remember to enable your POI category on the Properties screen?

David, that explains issue 1. Then I presume that .ov2 - as its "name" indicates - ovelays the .dat POI file. Is that right?
As to issue 2: yes I remembered to check the box of my Poi file and -when I select Navigate to > Point of Interest - it even lets me choose (under Type:) my file. But the screen where I'm supposed to choose one of my entries (under Name:) doensn't display any of them... ?!
I even tried the hard reset to the PDA but that didn't solve the problem.

Well guys... shame on me. Basic mistake! I just realized that west longitude must be negative!
I was putting my POIs (around 9ºW, in Lisbon)... in the water... somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea... near Sardenia... :D
