I Have just been given as a birthday present a basic GARMIN Etrex 12 Channel GPS unit. I do a fair amount of hillwalking/hiking & want to transpose GPS waypoints onto British Ordnance Survey maps. The unit has no facility to plug into a computer & frankly I am not sufficiently computer literate enough to be able to do it that way if I could. What I am hoping for is an easy way of coverting GPS readings to Ordnance Survey maps. Preferably by simply inserting the Positions into a framework and hitting the enter button to obtain a solution. I maybe asking the inpossible but hope that somebody can help. Cheers Bob

I used to have an Etrex, and I'm fairly sure it had a serial connection to a PC. These days you would probably need a serial to USB convertor. Whilst not wanting to doubt what you say - are you sure there is no connection - even if you weren't supplied with a cable?.

However - that wasn't your question.

What mapping are you looking to get your waypoint data across to? If, for example you use Memory map, the simplest way, but a bit longwinded, is to read off the coordinates from your GPS, them create a mark in Memorymap using these coordinates. You can do the same in a similar way with other PC based mapping. You could also create a table of your coordinates, in something like Excel orPOI edit, and save in a suitable format (eg CSV) for importing into whatever software you are using

Not sure if this is relevant to the question but does EasyGPS help in any way?

Thanx for the prompt reply Rick, The Etrex unit that I have has the moulding in the casing for a USB plug but no internal connex.
You have just proved that my comments re. my computer literacy are correct with your suggestions for a solution. My thoughts were that I could just enter the GPS co-ordinates into a table & find the equivalent OS position. I have seen this done on a site from which I arrived on this Website from, but for TomTom sat navs. I really only want to indicate the positions on a printable OS map available FOC from Ordnance Survey to upload to a walking website that I contribute walks to.
Hope you understand the above. Regards Bob

Bob,
Ah right - your task is just to convert the positional information from your Garmin (is it showing latitude and longitude?), to an Ordnance Survey grid reference - am I understanding your need here?
If so, try www.russ-hore.co.uk/osgb/index.php

Hi Rick, Sorry for the delay in replying. That info is exactly what I am looking for. Downloaded the link, contacted the author as per instructions but no reply, hence the delay. I tried the grid and discovered that I actually live approx 35miles from my address. The screed from the author stated that the bugs were gradually being removed from the programme but unless he contacts me with the upgrade I'll just have to keep looking.
Regards Bob

I came across the link by Googling for "convert Latitude and longitude to OSGB grid reference". Maybe something else more workable will turn up if you give it a go. Good luck with it

If you key the coordinates into a comma-delimited file then GPSU will read it and convert to OS coordinates. GPSU will plot the points onto a scanned map, too. For small maps, the freeware version might do.
