On your memory card there will be a folder named "voices" (all lower case without the ""), if its not present simply create one.

Put the voice files in to this folder - Mike

Yes, the memory card will contain the map folder and a folder called voices, it is into this you place the voice files.

Each voice file will be in the format of dataXX.chk / dataXX.vif (where XX is a number between 01 and 99) can you see any such files on your system? - Mike

Hi Mike, well I cannot find the voices on the card, however when I go to my documents and open the tomtom folder, in this is the following;-
currant map.dat
data04.dat
data04.chk
data05.vif
data.05.chk
I presume these are the two voice files ie jane and tim?, so is this the place to put new voice files then?
Sorry to be a pain but I am totally new to this sat nav updating lark
thanks

Yes you have found the voices, the problem with those files being in "My Documents" is they will consume valuable memory which is limited on a PDA. It is far better to add a voices folder to the root of the memory card and put all the voice files in that - storage capacity on an SD card is far less restrictive - Mike

Hi, Well it appears that unless the voices are put in my documents tomtom folder they will not work, as an experiment I took them out and put them into the map folder on the memory card and they would not work. Putting tim and jane back into my docs/tomtom and they worked again. Only problem is that when I put new voices into this ie the dataoo.vf data00.chk I cannot find where to put the bmpfile! just cannot find the bmp files anywhere doh!

Only the add on voice files have associated bmp files and these go in the same folder as the voice files, the application will pick up and display the picture when you go to switch voices and scroll through what is loaded to your device - Mike

Well, I've tried all different ways to get the voices out of My Docs/Tomtom, and to work from the memory card but to no avail. perhaps its a quirk on the navigator mobile 5, whatever, so I will give it up as a bad job. Doesn't seem worth all the hastle at least I have jane and tim, got one other to work from my docs but the bmp file does not show the icon in the tomtom voices, just shows a ? unknown, but the voice works.
thanks for all your help mike, cheers

Well I thought I had given up but I read a topic in the navigator forum that someone had the same problem and one kind person posted how to-- you need to put a file on the memory called just called TomTom, doesnt have to have anything in it and then the itn file, create a folder called voices and put the vif, chk and bmp files into this and whooppee it all works--doh! and there's me ready to throw a tantrum Laughing Out Loud.

thanks to all the great brains out there, goes to prove that this site is one of the best

ps it also meant I could get rid of the files in my docs and release space on the pna memory

Can you just check I've got this right...

In the root of the drive (i.e. not in any folder):

An empty file called "TomTom" (with capital letters or not?)
An empty file called "itn"? (confused here, usually named files with .itn at the end are itinerary files, nothing to do with voices)
A folder called "voices"

And in the "voices" folder:
the .vif, .chk and .bmp for each voice.

Bear in mind this is the PDA software version Andy, not quite the same as the standalone navigation devices - Mike

Didn't say it was, Mike...Smile

Just that an "itn" file hadn't been mentioned in any of the posts before and we all know getting the capital letters right is important.
