Hi All

Thought that I would let you all Know that I have found a great SD card.
I started looking when I orderd my upgrade to TomTom5.
Its a 1GB INOV8 x66.
I ordered it from
http://www.digiprintuk.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_16&products_id=68&osCsid=c89b6db7a3e76310daa9ed14b1255404

Its really quick and I have been using it since last Friday with out any problems at all.

BTW
I am still waiting for my upgrade to ship ordered lunchtime on the 1st June.

Would you mind speed testing this card for me? Specifically in Pocket Mechanic with the following reporting options:

Test Program: Pocket Mechanic 1.52
Settings:

Read test: yes
Write test: yes
Sequential sectors: yes
Random sectors: yes
Sectors/block: 64
Variable: yes
Repeat test: 3

Thanks,

Dan

And include the make, model, and firmware revision of your PDA since this can dramatically affect SD card performance.

What values do you normally expect from this test?

I have a Loox 420, WM2003se and an Integral 1GB 66x SD card which should be good for 9 Mb/s.

Results are Read: 0.58 MB/s and Write: 0.10 MB/s ???

Presumably I divide 9 Mb/s by 8 to give 1.125 MB/s, so I'm getting 50% read spead and 10% write speed!!

Or am I doing something wrong?

Roger

The speed of PPC SD interfaces appears to be quite a bit slower than you will find if you put an SD card into a USB reader attached to your PC. My Kingston card gives the following results:

Test Hardware: HP iPAQ h4150
Firmware: 1.10

Test Subject: Kingston SD Elite Pro 512MB
Format: FAT16
Cluster Size: 32K
Approx use: 327MB used

Read: 0.75MB/s 5.1X
Write: 0.35MB/s 2.4X

I will try some testing to night.
I only have Pocket Mechanic trial version but I will post the results.

Well some PDAs have only a 1 bit SD interface. Newer machines have also 4 bit-at-once.

So, it would seem to me that for use in a PDA the rated card speed is immaterial and only of any use when the card is used in a high speed card reader!

The speed looks to be determined by the PDA so no point in buying a fast card!

Here are the results from the test with the settings suggested by "dunos"
I could not find Pocket Mechanic v1.5.2
Pocket Mechanic v1.48 storage card benchmark results
Card Type: SD
Card Manufacturer: Inov8
Card Size: 1GB
Device: iPAQ 38xx
Average Read Speed: 0.36 MB/sec, 2.5X
Average Write Speed: 0.04 MB/sec, 0.3X

Not sure if these are good or not. 8O
Can you let me know what you would expect from an Ipaq 3870 rev 2.0 and rom rev 2.20.21 eng

Paul,

Thank you very much for your benchmark. I really don't know what to expect from your hardware or the card you tested but what I might start to do is compile a list of speed results for each make of ppc so that we can do some proper comparasons when people say things like "blimey that card is slow". I am in the market for a new SD card and I don't want to get a slow one ;)

Regards,

Dan

At the risk of repeating myself I am coming to the conclusion that since the cards are much faster than the PPC SD interface then the limiting factor is going to be the PPC. In other words the card speed is irrelevant.

My results for a 1GB 66x Integral SD Card are as follows:

In Pocket Loox 420:

Read 4X
Write 0.6X

In USB 2.0 High Speed Card Reader:
(timed transfer of 250 MB of large files)

Read 66X
Write 33X

These results show that the card reader is from 16 to 55 times faster than the PPC SD interface!!

It would be interesting to see results from one model of PPC with differing cards!!

I have had three SD cards so far, all of which I have used with my h4150. All three have had different speeds with a Bytestor 1GB card being the worst. The kingston I have posted about above is the fastest I have had so far.

Were these cards all nominally the same speed?
