Recently upgraded fro the original Go 700 to the 740 Live. So as you can imagine I'm pretty impresses so far. Hit the snag re activating my new product via TomTom Home but have made the call and am awaiting tomtom to reset my account with the new device.
So what other possibilities have tomtom ptentially opened with the embedded GPRS?
- HD Traffic feedback. They already get anon phone locations from vodafone. Now each x40Live has a built in GPRS capability could they more acurately feed back your location and av speed and add this into their mash-up of traffic data? It seems at the moment that (exluding google) the GPRS connection is a one-way push feed of data out to your device. The device itself could provide a whole load more info back - with yor permission obviously or how about a reduced subscription rate if you choose to feed your live info back.
- Emergency assistance AA/RAC etc. We already have the "Help Me" functionality. How about extending this in colaboration with the main road-side assistance providers. Say I have AA membership and I supply my membership number when setting the device up. When I break down I press a new button on help which is report breakdown. pressing this button sends a message direct to AA HQ including GPS position etc. AA send message back to TomTom confirming receipt and notifying of est arrival time of the man in a van.
Just a couple of thoughts for future capabilities. Can anybody think of more...... |

They already do. Every x40 is a live traffic sensor that reports back on speed, location etc anonymously.

Nice idea. No reason why such services won't appear in future devices.

I believe this is the problem when the device is activated via Home. I think it needs to be activated over its own SIM before connecting the device to Home. The account can be created through the website or Home without connecting the device to Home.
My first 940 activated over Home would not work with live services and my second activated over the SIM did. However the first 940 had a hardware power fault so this was not a conclusive test.

They should already have a rough idea where you are if your ringing from a mobile phone, and be able to give you an ETA on the engineer.
If you dont have help, but want to give someone your co-ordinates, all you need to do is goto Browse Map, and have the co-ordinates showing.
This comes in very useful when the wife is stuck in a traffic jam so i know where she is to offer human advice!!

| Last time broke down i managed to get into a lay-by with an Orange Emergency Phone Box. Rang the AA and gave them the 4 (or 5) digit code of the side of the Phone Box and they knew exactly where i was. Which was good because i couldn't explain it..... |

Interesting, my recovery provider was able to work out where abouts I was. - perhaps I signed something to say they could locate me.?
This was going back a while so perhaps rules may have changed?
Next time i will use my GPS co-ordinates anyways!

Unless you are a law enforcement agency with a signed RIPA warrant you can't get this data without authorisation of the mobile user. However, the RAC definately use this capability and authorisations can be completed verbally when for example you call them when you break down.
They simply ask if you want them to track your location via your mobile and that's it - Verilocation provide the service. So whilst it is not lawful for the likes of AA and RAC to use mobile Cell ID to give a rough position they do have the capability to do it. |
