Looks like the North Americans get some recompense for having to wait for the new TomTom devices to be launched over there - Engadget is reporting that they come with a year's free subscription to Live services as opposed to our three months Sad

HD traffic will NOT be part of the deal, though.

The only thing TomTom will be offering that's not already in use with MSN Direct is Google Search. Without enhanced HD traffic, what exactly is the big selling point? With Garmin, and now Kenwood, Mio and even upstart Nextar offering MSN and their newly expanded services, the 740 potential is fast fading IMO. .

MSN Direct is just another TMC Service though? TT's Traffic Service on the 740 will be delivered via GSM so no issues with reception, dangly wire antenna's etc. Google search is a nice plus but I agree that HD Traffic's absence is a shame.

Not referring to just MSN traffic (which isn't simply TMC but instead Navteq Traffic with 6 times the data throughput capabiliities of standard TMC via FM). MSNDirect also includes weather, stocks, latest news, gas prices, local events, movie times and ratings, and remote "Send To" destinations via maps.live. . Just recently added (for those with 2x5 and 7x5 as well as the new 8x5's) is Doppler Weather Radar maps and airline flight status. Only leaves Google Local Search as the missing feature compared to the 740's "live" services. And there's no additional "dangly traffic cable" on the Garmin MSN version as the single cable double-duties as power and traffic. Not sure how Mio, Nextar and Kenwood will integrate MSN as they are newly signed.

EDIT: I am a bit surprised that TomTom was not able to reach an agreement with Verizon in North America, since Vodaphone is one of the principal partners in Verizon.

Ditto but I suspect this is not an issue with any service provider arrangement, more an issue with ironing out the HD Traffic bugs before they deploy in the US!

Darren, correct that could be the issue. Quite a few players trying to work on HD here, so it appears to be a challenge.

Which carrier have they gone with? I presume it has to be a GSM based one like AT&T. I guess that HD traffic will follow when it is proven working on the base stations etc and can be an easy roll-out for the carrier.

Yes, AT&T I believe. Problem is that if they delay a year, they may be beaten to the punch. navteq (Nokia) already has their second stage beta under way in Southern California. Uses the same basic idea of anonymous cell data probes to augment existing data..
