I have a SmartNav installed in my car (no screen) but the service is too expensive, particularly the Safety Camera (SafeSpeed) Service at £140 a year!. So I am thinking of getting a portable but which one. I need UK & Ireland, plus Safety Cameras. Is the Tom Tom one (v.2) or the new XL the one to go for or Navman etc. But which one. There is so much choice and so many opinions on these threads that I am really confused. Any suggestions really appreciated. |

Go with a TomTom One UK but make sure it has the latest map installed (v675) it may have the earlier map (v660) if its been sat on the shelf for a while the unit should cost around £160, Europe maps are more costly if all you need is UK and IE save a few quid.
The One XL is a good unit but costs nearly £100 more than the basic TomTom One.
For speed cameras there is only choice if you want to trust the database, use the one from this site (OK I am biased 8) , but the Speed camera system TomTom is out of date and impossible to configure unlike the offering from this site).
So its not going to cost much more than your current update cost for the existing system - Mike |

Thanks Mike for the advice. Can you tell me how I ensure the unit has the latest map installation (v675) ? Also have been offered a new TomTomOne Europe for £130. Is this a good deal and can you use the UK postcode search with this one ? |

I have received a reply from TomTom to my query as to how I can ensure that a newTomTom One would have the v.675 maps installed and they advise that only version 660 is installed and you have to pay a further £25 to get the v.675. Is it worth it ? How poor is that anyway, to have a new version of mapping and not sell it with a brand new item. |

To be honest the 660 map is actually better around where I live, certain navigation faults at roundabouts that were wrong in 652 were corrected in 660 now the 675 version has re- introduced the errors.
As an example at the end of the M55 motorway the units says take first exit when in reality it should say take the third exit, there are other similar problems elsewhere. So I guess the 660 is a slightly older but worse map IMHO, add to that the fact they then want more money for this I wouldn't bother to be honest - Mike |
