The first priority surely has to be up to date maps, this is the main purpose of Satnavs, Ok add the frills but leave the choice to user to use or not. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

Absolutely but I was looking for feature ideas, not necessarily frills but improvements to the experience, the way a sat-nav displays data etc etc. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I'd like a device that can use different types of maps for different functions in one unit (eg for driving and hiking). I know they are about but one that's good at both.
Also, a heads-up display showing where to go overlaid on the actual road outside. (Probably not while hiking though ) _________________ Gerry

Yes, I've wished for sometime now for a HUD that gives the appearance to the driver of a green line painted on the road ahead. this line would show the correct lane to be in for junctions etc. It would appear to be underneath cars in front. |

Given the cost of HUD technology such an idea is unlikely. HUD's are already available but use simplified turn arrow indications only. Indeed Asus demonstrated a PND with a separate dash mounted HID projector which was very neat. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Automatic speed control.
GPS that says "Yes that's the road, when you're not sure" or "Not that one stupid".
GPS to drive the car to pick the kids up when the footballs on.
GPS to drive you home from the pub.
The possibiliies are endless. |
How wonderful would that be!!!!! The autopilot-GPS to drive you home from the PUB or club! In that case you could drink like a fish and not to worry about finding a taxi at 2am in the freezing cold and rain!
Another great feature would be auto-park where the car drops you outside your destination and then finds it self a parking space and parks!
There should also be auto-park + or auto-park deluxe with the add on feature of TWD (Traffic Warden Detector) where the car automatically detects an approaching traffic warden and moves away before they get any chance to stick that fine on your windscreen!!! |

well.... more seriously now and something for the near future.
Im not sure if such thing exists on PDA but on Garmin POIs is definately not there... how about time syncronised POIs???
At the moment we have the option to set speed and proximity to a POI but why not..time as well! For example we know that a bank opens 9-5 Mon-Fri, 8-2 Sat, Sun closed. How about if we could set these times and according to the GPS clock and date the POI will show active/inactive
I think that would be really useful, especially for restaraunts and shopping places |

What I like is what is happening with the iphone 3g at the moment. Open source gps device. There are lots of half decent software companies dying to have a go at gps many with fairly decent ideas, have now got a platform to try out their ideas on.
I would like to see addon software for my gps device, free and pay for, to allow me to enhance my devices in the way I want and not in the way the manufacturer thinks I want it!
I also think if the manufacturers de-cluttered their devices for just this purpose, the quality of the basic program and navigation could then improve! _________________ Dom

Darren, first you said...

Make your mind up mate.
All I really want is an up-to-date map, not the extras. New roads could be on the map before they are open and then made active afterwards. Just do it like the "opens in 19xx" dotted roads that paper maps have done for decades. Being digital, it doesn't even have to be shown before it's live. _________________ Gerry

I was looking for suggestions etc based on technology currently available, holographic windscreens, full colour HUDs etc aren't really feasible are they?
Now a holographic virtual navigator and auto-pilot may be great but rather unlikely I thought that a discussion here could lead to a short list of the best features of all the devices currently available. _________________ Darren Griffin |

best features? hmm.. lemme see...:
up to date (and accurate!) fuel prices
opening times for pois (see tsdinos' suggestion above)
3d landscapes (just the hills etc, NOT 3d buildings)
live traffic systems that work!!
highly configurable display options (think igo8 - especially with all the different skins available)
garmins handling of speed camera pois (ie not needing speedzoned but still get relevant speed warnings)
directional alerts for 3rd party pois
an easier method of disabling or simply removing in-built pois
cheaper map updates! (a-la navigon freshmaps, tomtom map updates etc)
decent windscreen mount that doesnt fall off or requires 20mm thick cables trailing around the car!
good battery life (like garmin's, NOT like tomtom's!

I believe that ALL mapping companies should consider to give to ALL of their customers with a registered GPS device FREE POI updates for ever. Petrol prices, opening times and business addresses is something that can change in just one day. POIs are getting outdated much faster than the maps.
They should either do a weekly update, or even better a LIVE update where you can download exactly what is in the database at that time (I think this could also work with the speed cameras, as I have seen other sites offering LIVE update instead of weekly)
Also I believe that this is very realistic and economic viable, as I believe they do get paid to add POIs from businesses that want to get advertised (although Im not really sure how the deal Mappning companies - Business that wants to get advertised works as both benefit from the deal) |

directional alerts for 3rd party pois (works perfectly with PGPSW Database and easy to copy over)

You're getting there MaFt, won't be long before you come over to iGO. I'm glad I took notice of Darren several months ago when he said how good it was. Haven't looked back since. _________________ Formerly known as Lost_Property

Apart from those suggested above;
The ability to tell the Sat Nav that I'm pulling a large trailer and can't go down narrow roads or round sharp bends. It would also prevent HGVs getting stuck in country villages. |
