Ok I'm new here so please be gentle.
I am pulling my hair out.
I want to update my garmin nuvi 200 but am having a nightmare.
Do I have to buy the maps from Garmin or is there somewhere else surley someone must have legal versions at a cheaper price i mean the updates are that expensive I might as well go buy a new unit !

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the world of SatNavs! (and to the Forum).

Mapping is expensive. This is due to the costs involved in compiling them and keeping up with all the changes that are going on. There's also an element

However no one is forcing you to update your maps - just like you didn't always need to buy a new road atlas every year. Some manufacturers will pop up nag screens after a while though!

You will also find that the latest maps are several months to a year out of date anyway - but at least manufacturers are addressing this issue slowly. The problem/pleasant suprise (depending on how you look at it) is that when you buy the upgrade for a UK/Ireland nuvi then you get the whole of Europe also - you will probably need an SD card to support the additional mapping.

Buying a new basic unit every couple of years isn't too silly - unless you want all the extras (like BT- handsfree, FM, TMC Traffic ...) when it's less economic.

Lots of bickering removed. Please do not repeat this.
