Currently I only have Western Europe only v7.05 maps on my TT720. I noticed the Western and Central Europe 8.15 maps for the TT720 are £60 ATM, which I am interested in getting as this would be cheaper than getting a 730/740?

Question: How do I get them on my TT720?

Does the TT Home 2.5 software delete the existing maps automatically, or do I simply do a full manual and Tomtom backup, delete the existing Western Europe only maps and Canary Island ones, and then copy the new downloaded maps across?

Or should I get a 730/740. Is bluetooth fixed on these devices as my 720 still has a hissing sound.

Hi Mojo
You will find that when the map installs it removes the existing map.

However, I prefer the second method. I delete the existing map folder before I start to download and the download creates a new folder complete with the new map installed.

By getting the new map you should end up with a device that will serve just as good as the new 730/940 and far, far cheaper.

Having just done this you may want to take a look at this topic which illustrates some of the issues I had upgrading to the 815 mapping. Most of these were probably caused by 'iffy' TomTom server connectivity. All the other downloads went without a hitch.

Check (I'm a 'new/returning' TT user so can't be sure) but do you need to upgrade the application to 830 to use this mapping release?

Added by edit: This is what I did with my 720. Upgraded the app then the mapping.

Indeed you do need to update the application prior to the map update:

1/ Perform a full Windows Explorer back up before you do anything else FAQ #1 on This Page explains how to do this if you are unsure.

2/ Update the device to the latest software standard which is currently 8,300 note it might take more than a single update to get it to 8,300 so make sure you have the latest version on the device by tapping the sat strength meter (lower right corner of the screen) followed by the version box.

3/ Update the map

4/ Back up the device again using Windows Explorer.

5/ Install POI files/ customise thwe device as you need - Mike

Hi Mojo
My Gawd! I do envy you folk with quick download speeds. It takes me around seven hours to download the maps.

I have a 4Mbit connection... not too bad. Loaded up the latest PGW camera db.

Questions:

1) Does the new maps overwrite the old TomTom installed Camera DB as these seemed to have gone? You'd have thought they'd replace it with an updated one?

2) Why is my postcode search only 4 digits now?

Other than that I will test the new maps today when I go to my parents for Xmas dinner.

Maps? You mean speed cameras? Ours won't overwrite TomToms but if you have installed a new map then their database will have been in the older map folder?

It shouldn't be?

Ok for the speed cam DB. I will use PGW ones

But as to the postcodes I think I think deleted them by mistake... and not backed up. How can I get the latest ones from Western and Central Europe v815?

The PostCodes aren't part of the map, they're in the zip folder?

If you have deleted them they can be downloaded again or I can email you a set, let me know?

Cheers Darren.

My ZIP folder was deleted from the TTG 720 and the normal backup, but I made a seperate full manual backup and it's in there.

However, would the new maps I purchased yesterday include the latest version of the postcodes or should I use wezipcodes715 from TomTom's web site, or oldboy's v801 ones? (or do you have a different set?)

It is only the latest GB Postcode (801).

I don't have the Netherlands to hand at the moment.

You could install the Netherlands from the wezipcodes715 and then upgrade the GB files to the 801.
