Dear all,

I am looking to replace my now venerable, but reliable, original eTrex and would welcome advice from those here as to the units I should be considering.

I'm not a hardcore hillwalker (small children prevent me from being too ambitious in my trips for the next few years), and regard my GPS as a useful shortcut to my usual map-'n-compass. As you can see from my previous unit, I haven't had a mapping unit before. I have owned both Magellan & Garmin units in the past, and am not particularly wedded to any particular brand.

I was considering an Active 10, but am seriously concerned by the long-running debates about lock-ups, battery issues and other posts here. That might be considered the upper limit to my budget for a replacement.

Edit - just updated to say that I have a Tom Tom for the car, so I'm not looking for devices that also have turn-by-turn navigation features.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Regards,

Jonathan

If you are not going to be doing a lot of walking then I would look to replace the eTrex with a more sensitive unit and stay using it with your map and compass. I do have a mapping unit but I find that for most walking I still have my trusty paper map with me. Now-a-days I use MemoryMap on the PC to create the walks, transfer the routes/waypoints to the GPS and print off the map together with the info superimposed on it.

Trouble is - the highly sensitive units are usually mapping units.
