There was a lot of talk about once you downloaded the v8 maps to a x20 that you would have in reality a x30 device.

While it does give you the features of ALG etc, what i'm asking is what are the physical differences as well as software differences.

The reason this has come up, in the post regarding voice problems since the v8.300 update, it has transpired that the loquendo TTS file is a different version, ie 6.9 as opposed to 7.0

So are the units, say 720 & 730 the same mechanical build up and only different in the software they use or are there physical differences.

No physical differences. That's my understanding.

Exactly. An x20 with v8 software and a v8.10 or later map is identical to an x30 with the same software.

No thats just my point, the're not identical.

This whole voice problem has highlighted that the x30 have a newer version loquendo TTs file. So i'm saying what else is different?

I like others have assumed that when you put v8 maps on a x20 it becomes a x30.

Other than the colour of the menu screens and background they are identical, you cannot change the menu colour or the device ident as this is set when the device was newly built.
All the other differences are software related, boot screen graphics, LoquendoTTS version are about the only differences I know of between my x20 and x30 units in software terms - Mike

And all these are so minor as to be unimportant. The use, operation and features are identical. The difference between file versions you mention is irrelevant.

Without wishing to labour the point, it is relevant.

Not one x30 has reported the voice stuttering that the x20's have been having.

The TTS v7 file seems like it may be a fix for this, so again it does seem relevant.

All i was trying to do was ascertain if that was the only difference.

There ahs been more than one report of stammering x30 devices, but they do seem less affected by this issue. As we said earlier in this thread only difference is really the software, the LoqTTS files being just one small part - Mike

OK I can concede that point! But there was no issue prior to the v8.3 update so the cause lies within that and not necessarily within the TTS files themselves.

TomTom have been notified and we can but hope that a fix will be forthcoming at some point!

The biggest difference in my experience is that the x30 works. x20s were pathetic.

I must be lucky then, my 520 and 720 both perform perfectly. I don't use FM tx nor do I need an mp3 player but as Nav units they've both been very reliable.

I returned 3 or 4 faulty 720 units (each had different faults), I then bought a 920 which needed two major repairs in 7 months, including replacing the PCB after which it still had many problems. Tom tom finally replaced the 920 with a 930 which is so far absolutely fantastic.

Not so Duncan... my Go 520 is a fantastic piece of kit... when loaded with the features that were available when it was released onto the market... It is just that Tom Tom for unknown reasons, have decided to offer X20 owners the same features as X30 devices, which has caused the appearence of two HUGE topics on this forum, due to Tom Tom releasing faulty software updates for the older model... they are in effect identical hardware, and it is due to this hardware, now working close to the limit of it's capacity with this new software on both models, that one small "glitch" in the software will cause it all to go pear shaped...

Alan.

I must be unlucky then, as i use mine solely as a GPS, no FM, no MP3, no Traffic, use itenerary and directions!

Thanks for passing on to TT, i hope they get their finger out and sort it.

On a sidenote, the screen quality was better on the 930 than the 920 I had next to it. This may have just been different batches of LCD panels or a deliberate design change. It was easy to see because when switched off, the LCD panels are not the same shade of grey.
