Quote: | Paul, do you know if the 765 replace the 760 or is it a separate model that will run alongside? |
I think the xx5 models are a "one up" from the xx0 models. i.e. the 765 is one up from the 760. The xx5's will have the extra features (the configurable display, the Lane Assist, 3D buildings, increased waypoints and photo navigation) and should run along side the xx0 series.
Comparing the 765 and the 760 here the only real difference is the "fluff".
Looking online you are paying an extra £75 for the 765 over the 760, so i think there's room for both on the market. |

I did note that the 765 has a.......price premium...shall we say. The 760 has the TTS I want and that should be enough. The only issue is the routing differences between TT and Garmin...but thats another thread..... _________________ TomTom 720

Cheers Paul. Most of those features I could live without. Garmin's implementation of Lane Assist is excellent though:
And I would want the configurable info field but all the other stuff I can live without but I'd have difficulty justifying the additional cost. _________________ Darren Griffin

Owners of the 760 have complained of some routing errors and a new firmware should be out soon to deal with that. I suspect these major problems are to do with the Route Optimisation for Multi-Drop Routes where the unit changes your final destination to one of the points you going to, so instead of A-B-C-D-E-F-A, you get A-B-C-D-E-F-C after optimising the route.
I've also complained that the unit much prefers the back roads to main roads and occasionally will take you off a main road and through the house only to rejoin the main road a mile later. |

Yes, I've read that. I wonder if this is also a "feature" on the 765. But as Darren says....its quite an expensive little box. I might well wait until I can get my grubby hands on one and possibly wait until the price drops.
I can get a TT720 for £140, TT730(delivered) for £204, and a Garmin 765 for £263 (definately pricey)...
Its a tough call and I'll either cheer on deflation and watch the price drop more....maybe....or just toss a coin... _________________ TomTom 720

Just to give you an idea of the 3D mapping and other 765 specific stuff here are some examples:
3D Buildings
3D Building footprints

Not keen on that. Maybe I'm so used to the usual screen...and I only use the flat 2D anyway out of preference......but it just seems like unecessary graphics and doesn't add anything to the actual navigation....and possibly more to go wrong with the software.
But maybe thats just me.... _________________ TomTom 720

Nope, I'd agree with you. Looks great in the shop maybe but it adds nothing to the nav experience. _________________ Darren Griffin |

It seems like theres a marketing battle going for who can keep ahead of the others by adding more features that nobody actually needs. Whatever I get...and I do like both the TomTom AND Garmin ranges...I will just about disable everything bar the actual navigating and TTS...seems a waste of resource but its just like the mobile phone market.
I just want a solid nav tool with TTS....and...well....thats it. _________________ TomTom 720

It would be nice if they devoted a little more time to the back roads issue.
I don't know how they compare side-by-side on this issue with TomTom but anecdotally my father in law seems to have as many issues with his Go's routing as I do with my Nuvi 310.
I've never been to Cornwall with it and narrow lanes are the norm down there so I wonder how you tell if it's leading you a merry dance? |

topgazza, on that basis the TT720 would surely be your best bet. _________________ Samsung Mega

Darren, is the ALG not available for the 760's?
I've got the latest Navigator Europe NT 2009 Map,
Latest Software version 4.2.
This is the latest version via webupdater.
If not, any idea if it will be? _________________ TT Go 920T

I'm afraid not.

Probably won't be as it would require a large addition to the firmware and would remove one of the distinctions between the xx0 range and the xx5 range.
BTW anyone tried the Photo Navigation feature? |
