| Has anyone else noticed the alarming trend of the software companies to be moving to an annual subscription charge instead of an outright purchase. Some of the prices quoted are as high for a 1 or 2 year license as currently charged for a 'one off' purchase. Is this likely to become the norm? Sincerely hope not!! |

Got any examples? I don't have any software on subscription, normally reserved for large business solutions where the subscription is effectively a support contract.

| Wayfinder (was Navicore) is now subscription and Nokia Maps also if you want to use them for SatNav use. |

Ah yes but they are different in that the data is held off-board i.e. on remote servers. Only the map data required for your current journey is downloaded each time.
That ensures you have the latest map and don't waste storage space on data you might never need.
There are many such off-board nav systems and most are naturally subscription based.

| Don't think so. Wayfinder in particular can still be downloaded so that the map data is held on the device but is still covered by a license limit. It is my understanding that the same applies to Nokia Maps. You are right in that you can use these solutions in an 'off board' way but both offer 'on board' options with a subscription charge |

Your original post said companies were 'moving' to an annual subscription model.
Wayfinder has always been subscription based. I have Wayfinder here and apart from caching of the maps it downloads it cannot be used without a subscription. It's an off-board solution, maps are only stored to improve performance and cater for situations here the data connection may be lost.
How would you 'download' an entire map in Wayfinder?

Ah that's interesting, I knew Wayfinder had bought Nervier but hadn't seen that option which is news to me!
I'll ask them if this is an offer to persuade Nervier users to move to Wayfinder or if it's a new product
