Hand held laser cameras at night

Recently saw several drivers getting booked for speeding by an officer with a hand held laser camera. It was 7.30pm and dark. I was always under the impression that only Gatso's operated effectively in the dark. Is this wrong?

Indeed, so long as the operator can effectively identify and target a vehicle then a laser will work. Lasers can work in total darkness but the operator needs some light in order to see the vehicle and target it.

Yes, i saw a hand held lasergun when i was on my way to work at 2.20am in the morning,so they do use them at night.
