This is TTs answer to that problem. It has worked for some, so it is worth giving it a go.

thanks
nice to know there is advice around so quickly
i am currently downloading a new map through go same as i did before so hope this will work
whats confusing me is that at first i copied all 48 files through explorer and assumed when i reinstalled them it would restore the device to virgin state

i dont want to install the new application yet as i have read some apps dont like it

phew sorted
good job i followed the advice on here and made a full backup from new as the 'GO' software does not work as expected
i noticed that despite using the recovery my device had 53 files on it compared to the original 48
ie although it restored it it did not remove the extra files added during tomtom updates one of which was a map folder
cure was to delete all files and reinstall my original backup i made after reading this forum

simple really, i just fell into the trap of believing the tomtom software
