Hey,

Thanks to the info Darren gave me prior to my TomTom arriving I've managed to update my 520 and now have 810 maps meaning IQ routes and lane assistance... Woo!

Now got a few questions:

a) How can I delete routes from the device history? Does "Factory Reset" delete everything including settings and preferences? Or just device history, etc?

b) On the PocketGPSWorld site there is a section entitled Free POIs. Having download all they only come to 4mb... Certainly enough room on the TomTom for this. Is there any problem with adding or? Or is it advised against? I would also be looking to add all voice files for these too. Again, advised?

Cheers!

EDIT: Just been out for a quick test drive with this thing. AMAZING. A million times better than my Navigon!! One thing - How can I just "go for a drive". Eg, I don't want a destination but just to drive and make use of the map, perhaps music but most importantly to receive speed camera updates? It seems to constantly want to navigate me somewhere (Usually the last place specified). Cheers!

A factory reset will wipe all user defined settings returning the device to the same condition it was in when you removed it from the box for the first time, with the exception of the Navcore application updates and actual Maps. Once the list of recent destinations gets full the oldest entry will be lost as new ones as added.

Beware of adding all the POI files there is a limit of around 160 custom POI categories on the device, if you exceed this figure the device will decide which POI files to make available for display - this often leads to a loss of the Speed Camera POI file first! - Only install the POI files you really need, also consider saving the POI files into combined categories, for example for fuel you can have all 15 or more categories, one for each supplier, or roll the whole lot into a single POI file to reduce the number of files on the device.

If you want Speed Camera Warnings without a route planned you need to configure the "Warn When Near POI" option and simply don't select the checkbox labelled "Warn only if POI on route" - To get rid of a route you can select "Clear Route" in the main menu (page 3 IIRC), if its not visible on your device go to change preferences/ Show all menu Icons and try again (by default the route clear option is hidden) - Mike

Thanks for such a definitive answer to all of my questions.

You mention that the TomTom has a limit of custom POI. Would I be safe in leaving the ones that are already on the device, plus adding all of the speed cameras in the PocketGPSWorld database? Would this exceed the limit?

Looking at the list of custom POI there are none that I'd really want (Was only got going to put them on "'cos I can!"). The default on the device (Which may be pretty poor or not... Don't know havn't used it... ) will be enough for me if I ever do need them (Currently all disabled).

Would having these default plus speed camera database be okay?

Cheers.

The built in POI files do not count towards the total number of POI files contributing towards the limit. The built in POI files are not something I would trust to be honest, the files from this site are considerably more accurate - work out which ones you need and add those to the map folder.

If you have all the speed camera files on your device they will count as 31 files which is well within the limit for your device, the reason I wasn't too specific on the exact number is due to it changing from time to time as the software evolves and is reissued.

You can have around 160 custom POI files on your device, each ov2 file within the map folder counts as one custom POI category, if you have close to 160 ov2 files in the map folder then you need to re-think what you are doing - Mike

Hi,

Thanks again for the reply.

I have to pop some money to the bank in a moment but this afternoon I intend becoming a member of this site and downloading the speed camera warnings. I have read how to remove the TomTom alerts, and have found the pages documenting the speed camera POI, images and voice alerts.

One thing I am not too sure of is which order I should do these and, for example, things like with the images which ones to get. I know they have recommended ones but then it mentions along the lines of "use the 24x24 standard set matched with the 44x44 large icons".

I am unsure how to use both (Though admittedly havn't actually tried yet).

Can you please assist in helping me to get all f these feature working? I don't want to waste any more of your time (I've been a real pain inthe backside so far) so if you could just reference to other instructions on the site but elaborate where necessary that would be fantastic.

Further more, is it possible to "test" everything is working correctly when done? Just to check the POI's will display and show images and voice alerts without having to drive around to one of every camera type.

Cheers Smile

Download the Speed Camera database in the format you require (Speed Zoned offers the most comprehensive setup), unzip the download and copy the files to the map folder on the device, make sure you copy the ov2 and bmp files as the icons are still needed in addition to the larger icon pack..

Download the larger icon pack and unzip this to the map folder on the device, this must match the type of camera database you download, so if you went for Speed Zoned for the database you must choose Speed Zoned for the larger icon pack.

Download the Spoken alerts (ogg files) again these must match the type of database downloaded above, if you want to use the Text To speech option for typing in the warnings then you can skip this step.

Disconnect the device from the PC and let it boot up, now configure all the Speed Camera Warnings as detailed in the user guides on the site.

For testing I usually try this:

Go to Advanced Planning (AtoB)
set a departure point of FY43NN house number 95
Set a destination point of PR41AX house number 33 (if it lets you)
When the device has planned the route tap the button marked "Details" followed by "Show Route Demo" set the speed to around 100% and sit back watch and listen.

You will get warnings in the following order if you let it play for around 20 mins at 100%:
Gatso30, Mobile30, Mobile40, Gatso50, Mobile50, Mobile30, Mobile30

Thanks for the reply.

I've followed all advice and installed it what I think is correctly.

I've followed your postcode route to check everything is working correctly. I didn't get exactly the confirmations you did, but the fact that some work leads me to believe everything *is* working (Considering I did the same thing with each).

I got the Gatso30 and Mobile30 as did you. On the Mobile40 I received the warning of it (Verbal and got the icon in the corner) but it was *not* on the route - Is this correct? Is this camera actually on a nearby road?

I then got the Gatso50 as did you.

I did *not* get the Mobile50 at all. Is this a problem?

I got the two remaining Mobile30's as did you.

It seems that things are set up but the fact I've got a few deviations from yours worries me slightly (I don't want to get "comfortable" with using the database when certain groups are not showing up, despite me thinking otherwise). Does what I've got sound okay? If not, I'd best get looking.

I'm going to go for a drive around the local area now and will test it past a few near me, but I'd still appreciate any feedback from you.

Cheers! Smile

The mobile 40 that appears off the road is down to a mapping error, the camera position is correct but the road has been a little out of place on some releases, the Mobile 50 that you didn't get warning of has been deleted as it is a location that has not been used for some considerable time (I should have remembered that one and omitted it from the list) - my apologies Embarassed , otherwise you seem to have it all working fine - Mike

That's brill! Seems I'm all sorted now.

Thank you for the considerable effort you've put into sorting me out with the TomTom.

Cheers

Give it a week or two and you will be helping others out on the forum with answers to questions, at first the whole scenario can appear somewhat daunting but its not difficult once you get the hang of it - enjoy the unit now you have it sorted out - Mike

Just been out for a drive and both the TomTom and the PocketGPSWorld speed cameras work excellent. I'd recommend the both of them.

Found many spots in my town where there are portable cameras in use that I'd no idea of before! Found one place where I know camera vans operate that is not picked up by the speed camera database, and which I'll be submitting once I've found out the whole process.

Driving away for a mid-week break on Monday... Will be excellent taking the TomTom with me, especially improved by the addition of the camera database Very Happy

Cheers!

Dan.

PS. "Car Preferences" option is greyed out... From what I can tell in the manual I can understand why this is, but can anybody confirm that indeed it *should* be greyed out? Cheers!

If you ever find out what that is for please let us know, it has been greyed out since the very first time the icon was spotted on a device - quite normal - Mike

Hope I'm not posting the obvious but the manual states:

Quote:
Tap this button to change the way your GO responds to events in your car.
• Link night view to headlights
• Instructions mute car radio

From what I can find on the internet TomTom initially planned to have some form of connection between the TomTom and the car (Eg, to link with headlights) but from what I can tell they've pulled that idea. Not sure why it's still there though...

Probably more of a pain to remove than just to leave blanked out.

Also could intend to use it sometime in the future, could also balance the displays instead of having lots more white space.

You seem very pleased with your purchase, hope all goes well with it. There are quite a few forum subjects where people have problems but overall I have been very pleased with the way it all comes together.

Cheers

Carl

Now that's the sort of "mid"-week break I can go along with (assuming you're coming back next Saturday). Thumbs Up
