Hi

I have recently bought a TomTom map from the website which I have downloaded onto SD card. I have inserted the card into my device and have gone to Tom Tom home and selected Memory card as my device but I still cannot view my US map, the gps is just showing the maps that are on the internal memory. Am I doing something wrong? I am panicking a bit as leave for Florida on Thirsday!!!
Thanks in advance for any help!!
Tx Surprised

Welcome

Moved to the TomTom forum in the hope of a more comprehensive response.

No problem, it's not always easy to know where best to post.

Unfortunately, I don't have experience of using an SD card in my 720, but I'm sure there are others who'll be able to help.

Hopefully, there's a simple answer to this one....
On the Go itself, you need to go to Change preferences/Map Preferences/Switch map (or you can do it in the on-screen emulator in Home too).

If the map was installed correctly to the card, then ALL your maps on both the internal memory and the SD card should be listed.

For info, the selection of internal or external storage that you do when Home starts up is ONLY to tell Home where to store stuff, nothing to do with the use of the Go itself.

Thanks very much for your reply, I tried that, but the US map doesn't come up, just the ones that were originally on the go. When I go into TOM TOM home the US maps are showing as being on my sd card though! I am a bit of a technophobe and noW i am competely confused!!

Hmmm...

Try a reset (with a pin in the tiny hole on the bottom of the unit)?

(Where to find it... Click here)

If still no joy....
Home downloads the map and stores a copy of it on your PC, so you should be able to install it again without having to re-download it.
Use Home to wipe it off the card and use "Add maps, traffic voices etc." to try putting it back again.

As part of the security process your tomtom needs to be connected to the PC whilst home downloads the map in order that the correct dct (security) file can be created on your tomtom. Did this happen?
Your post could imply that you downloaded a map and put it on an SD card using a PC card reader without the tomtom being connected, this doesn't work as the security file doesn't get generated.

I'm no expert like some on here!

But just to make life easy, couldn't he just drag his UK map to the PC with explorer and then download the USA map to the device, thus doing away with the need for a SD card?

Likewise then on his return, drag the USA map to his PC and replace his UK map to the Device.

Just a thought but it seems like SD cards cause more hassle than good.
And its not like you need to instantly swap from UK to USA is it?

It is possible to move the maps from the device to the PC and back again but it should work with the map on the SD Card.

A couple of points, the activation code might be missing, have a look in the map folder and is there a file named something like this:
North_America_2GB-12.meta.dct (Your map file might be different to the one I grabed that name from, but look for a file with the extension of .meta.dct as highlighted above). If it is missing you will need to connect the device to Home and re-download the map to get the activation code, without this file (which is specific to your device) the map will not show up in the map list.
Secondly what is the speed of the SD card you are trying to use, if its too slow the TomTom will refuse to read the card - Mike
